Before buying a new switch, take your old one apart, and clean the contacts inside. They tend to get stuff caked in there.

Do this if you have the patience. Be sure to open the switch over a shoe box, as parts have a tendency to drop out unexpectedly.
ATF is available at an auto parts store, the filter, probably not.
Top off with fluid, Trans-X till you can do a change. Remember, you need to drain the torque converter AND the pan, go ahead and get a new pan gasket, and be sure to properly torque the bolts.
You may be able to get a service manual on cd.

Well, there are obviously several things that I have to figure out when I get home and have my tools... One thing I do need to figure out ASAP, I don't think the fan works... At least I haven't figured out how to work it... I've tried pushing the different buttons... but I haven't figured it out yet... I hope I don't have to replace the whole system... I'm thinking it 'might' be the fuses... but I'm not sure... and where is the Rheostat dimmer? the dash lights came on for a minute or two last night... then went back off...

Hey Barick,
Glad to hear you passed your DL test and glad to hear you got your car. Don't get too excited about the things you have found there will be more. Like I said in a previous post, let me know if you need any help. Most of what you have described sounds fairly minor and as long as you are willing to try I am willing to give whatever help I can. I am no AC expert but we can probably figure out an answer. Great to hear you are a proud Merc owner and let me know if I can help.

Good to hear things have been falling into place for you and there is a forum member close by to help. and your MOM will know where you are most of the time, especially when Lovely "Cacela" doesn`t want to cooperate .

Look into the DIY articles, there is a switch refurbish write up in the general section that will help. some good pictures.

removing the door panel, there are 2 screws holding the curved plastic piece next to the quarter window. they are next to the door gasket. then lift the piece up.

2 screws on the chrome goody around the latch.

unscrew the door lock button.

use a tinny screw driver to pop out the black cover behind the chrome door handle. once the small phillips screw is removed, the piece will slide back on the arm rest to reveal a large phillips screw. It`s a little difficult as nothing wants to cooperate. there are two more large phillip screws under the arm rest, and it should come off.

The panel then lifts straight up, do not pull towards you or the tabs will break. thought it came off the same as my W123, oops. broke a couple.
lift up to release, then forward. be careful, there are two wires for the ash tray and the door light at the bottom of the panel.

I have seen a ton of panels destroyed at PNP because someone didn`t know how to remove them.

Check E-Bay for paper manuals, they come up time to time. watch how the prices go, some of these idiots bid these things out of sight. I picked up 5 for the 123 for $212.00. vol 1 &2, A/C climate control, 617.95 eng., and the maintenance manual yrs 81 to 93.
The W126 manuals don`t seem to be as plentiful.
with the CD`s you can print the pages you need when working on the car so the book doesn`t get greasy.

the fans on these cars are MAJOR PIA... first open up your fuse box and look at fuse # 11 I think, if you have your card in there, it will tell you which one controls the blower.
I bet you find a melted fuse. MB has a "fix" where they bypass the fuse holder with a more robust one, and up the fuse size to 30A... maxi fuse. but usually the reason the fuse is melted is the blower bearings have siezed. if so, start looking for a replacement blower. I bought the one with just the motor, as I'm a cheapskate... getting that cage off the shaft is VERY HARD! so you may be better off getting the blower with the cage already installed. your choice, I found mine on ebay, it's already giving me problems. spend the money and get the RIGHT motor from fastlane here.
there is also a DIY article for rebuilding the brushes on these, but the bearings cannot be replaced, so if they are shot, toss the thing.
have fun!

As others stated for the blower first check the fuse and infact just change it out as they crack in a way you can't always see. If the blower still doesn't work it is easy to get to. To get to the blower remove the panel under the passanger side of the dash and then remove the screws on the bottom of the fan housing that you will see there (I doen't remember how many screws but it's 5 or 6 I think). When you have the fan out and unplugged test the connector with the fan switch on to see if you are getting power and if you are then carefully remove the brushes from the motor and clean their housings then put them back in and try it. I lubed the bearings on mine with a little spray lube and it has been working ok ever since.

Read this about switches and if it looks like something you would be willing to try then the window switches will be easy. None of the switches are hard to recondition but you have to take your time doing them. This write up is for range rover seat switches but they are the same ones as our cars.

If the brushes are bad in the fan I made a DIY guide to replacing them. It can be found in the DIY articles section of this site. $5 for brushes is better than $100 for a motor!

there are a lot of things on the driver's side of the engine that could be leaking oil. the #1 thing I would check is the oil cooler lines! the oil cooler is the small vertical radiator on the driver's side of the normal radiator. it has a pair of lines that go to the top and bottom of it. if there is ANY oil on the lines, you should park your car and order a new set of lines from the dealer ASAP! if those lines look good, you could have a caliper leaking brake fluid, or you could have a fuel leak.
have fun with your car!

Your really killing us not posting pictures. Wait too much longer and I'll drive down there and post them myself.
