Trans. problems

Well this is getting somewhere now....

Does the special nut turn with the shaft it is screwed onto (output shaft)...?

Going to have to get the nut loose to see what is stripped...you could be lucky and just have a bad or split flange..... and hope the output shaft is ok.....hope for the best here....sounds like the trans may be mostly ok at this point...

I can mail you guys the tool I made if you want to borrow it to remove the nut....
Mailed tool Monday morn...should have in a couple days...

Does anyone know if the flanges are the same for manuals and automatics, or are they specialized?

They are the same. I took one from an auto 240D and put it onto my manual.

Mystery solved, the splines on the flange were indeed stripped. Now all I need is a new one. Anyone have a spare?

call that place in Seattle, thats how they rebuild them, from parts from others, except syncros and bearings. I would take a peek inside and look for what caused the problem.

I think it was just old and it failed. I am a teenager, I probably drive the car a little harder than I should. It would also make sense that it happened after I downshifted into third.

I have one last question. It looks like the splines on the output shaft may be worn. It also looks like a gouge one the threads of the nut and the threads on the main shaft. What does this mean?

LOL...Well these cars are tough, they stood the test of my daughters driving, and probably, if you fix this car up it will hold up to your driving

Does anyone know if the factory still makes the flange or the output shaft? If so, how much do they go for? Does anyone have a used output shaft?

You just need the flange from any w123 or I think w126 transmission. You should also replace the seal while you in there and get a new nut as well. The new style nut is a 12 point and is much easier to work with.

Have you tried Hollands auto wrecking in Billerica? I know Jacks has a w123 or 2 but they are silly expensive. Both places are very close to you and I would recommend checking them out.

If a w126 flange will work, I can pull one off of a tranny in my garage. I have a gasser tranny on the floor currently.
I'd say you could have it for the cost of shipping, unless you felt generous.

Well I'm not sure what to do now. I took off the rear cover to reveal more splines in considerably better condition than the ones the flange was attached to (photos of several rotations attached). Mum talked about getting it chrome plated and remachined. What about a replacement? How difficult and/or time consuming is it to take out?

That is pretty bad. I would say you need a used transmission. You might be able to clean it up really well and red locktite a new flange in place but I only see that as a short term fix. Chroming and machining might work, but will cost a bunch and be a huge pain in the ass.

I would call around to the local junk yards and see what turns up, you might get lucky.

Flange

Do you have some pics of the flange..?
Put the flange on the shaft to see how far it goes onto the splined shaft and get some pics of them fully seated....

Plating would not hold up in this application....will need heat fused metal to provide the strength for these loads....

Does the flange seat all the way onto the good splines back to the shoulder of the non-damaged portion...?

I think the flange only covers the part of the spline that is damaged, the good part is where the speedo drive gear sits. In theory one could get 2 flanges, cut, weld, and machine to make the internal spine longer and not use the speedo drive gear. But welding cast is not fun or easy, and driving without a working speedo sucks (Mine does not work with my 5 speed)
