How to NOT remove a pulley from an alternator: a tutorial. 1984 300D
1. Never hit it with a hammer, hoping to loosen it up.
2. Never pry on it and the cooling fan with a screwdriver. 3. Never fail to ask the professional, who removed the nut, to remove the pulley and fan too. 4. Never spend an entire night trying to remember how to put it all back together, then get your hopes up because your car fires up right away, then realize that your bent pulley (see rules 1 & 2) is fraying the belts. So...yeah...I need a pulley and cooling fan from a 65 amp Bosch alternator. Wait... WTB: pulley and alternator for 65 amp Bosch alternator And, I need it ASAP. The wife is tired of me driving her car and leaving her stranded at home all day, every day. Anyone got an extra one lying around that they can pop in the mail for me tomorrow? Or, if one of you kind local souls has one, I can come pick it up tomorrow during the day. Ahh - every day is a new learning experience. I suppose that by the time I get my second, third, and fourth w123, I'll know these cars inside and out! Thanks guys.

Then drive it, charge the battery at home every night Its a diesel- no sparks required, and its daylight savings. I did it in january.

just go get a new bosch alt, it comes with pulley...cant you get a 90 or 120 amp while your at it (for about same price)? All else fails call the Benz Store in Atlanta. Ken will ship you whatever you want new or used w/or w/o pulley and he knows what will fit. and use an impact gun, sheesh...thats rookie! (and for the record Ive never ever ever made stoooooopid mistakes...ever, except the time I flushed a nice audi 100 "coolant hose" with 5 gal of garden hose water that was actually a breather hose to connected to crank, then started motor and milkshaked the ENTIRE motor and airbox...or when I nearly burned my 300D to ground by putting the fuse 2' AFTER power source and it grounded before said fuse resulting in smoke so thick in cabin i had to roll out of it at a stop light..i could go on and on) we all make mistakes man, having 2 kids running around garage doesnt seem to help me either

No can do - I drive around for a living, so my battery will wear down quickly with all the subsequent stop/starts.

Get an AL129X; and wire it in
The AL129X is 115A instead of 65.... edit:I got mine on ebay for around $100 shipped, some sellers give you the proper pulley with it "Alternator" 115 Amp Bosch AL129X works in 123s!

EDIT: I have no idea what the belt layout is in that thing. If it's fraying the same belt that's running the water pump, or something, then that's a very BAD idea and I never suggested it. If the alt can be disabled without killing anything else important, then just pull that belt off and go with it. |

I just nabbed a 115A unit off a Saab Saturday for $10 (half off day)....and, it is not even 2 years old (date stamped 2007)
![]() ![]() As for getting off the pulley/fan, an impact of any sort works great. I use a Harbor Freight 1/2 drive 12V Digital Impact wrench to do that sort of stuff......pulleys, allen bolts inside the hub/rotor assembly.....etc. Works great. Not bad for $49 It even comes with two double sided sockets (one of which fits alternators)

Ditto on the 12 Volt Impact Wrench I have at least 4 of them. I keep 1 in each vehicle. They are made for tire changing but work almost like an Pneumatic Impact Wrench without the need for an Air Compressor. I have not bought one for awhile but when they were on sale at Harbor Freight they cost around $22 each. It also speeds up Tire Rotation. 12 Volt impact below used when I took apart my Alternator and changed the a Bearing. ![]() ![]()

This is a bad idea. Alternator and water pump are on the same belt.
