Delvac 1 is hard to find. I've never seen it at any of the auto shops or WalMarts I go to.

MB specs quote (from Mobil?) [Ice Cubes in an Oven,First]

What's 228.3 or 228.31 MB oil Specs?

With the 602.962's flat tappet cams ,
I'll always Opt for the Rotella T 5W40 Synthetic (I Know , It's not a stage 4 base)

No 10W30, Ever ('Don't care if Karl Benz,Himself, comes back and says it's O.K.)

Mobil 1 for truck and turbodiesel will be called Delvac 1, I guess it is not out there yet.

I wondered what that missing MB spec might mean.

I suppose I could make my own synthetic blend, half Delvac 15w40 and half M1 T&TD to save some $'s.

I'm used to 10k OCI's on my 4 banger gasser with M1 but am having problems with the idea in my new to me MB. I'm at 4k now with Delvac 15w40 and am having arguments with myself to let it go to 5k. If I could ever convince myself, and be comfortable with 7.5-10k OCI's with a synthetic in my diesel I'd do it. Mostly my uncertainty lies in my ignorance of the whole Soot level thing.

I compute breakeven costs with syns vs. petros and right now here are the numbers.

Using my currents costs for filters and oils:

Delvac @ 4000 mi OCI = Mobil T&TD @ 7000 mi OCI

Delvac @ 5000 mi OCI = Mobil T&TD @ 8700 mi OCI

I know this probably seems a little anal to some of you guys.

Also, the fact that the motor oil lubes the injector pump causes me some consternation with extended OCI's.

Use Delvac Super 15W-40 and if in extreme conditions like super low temps, use Delvac 1, Delo 400 is also another excellent choice. Mobil 1 is good for gassers but its rating is lower than all the HDEO diesel oils.

When we are refereing to Mobil 1 in this thread we are refering to Mobil 1 truck and turbodiesel which is different than regular Mobil 1 that is why the name change to Delvac 1 to reduce confusion.

Then its fine, Mobil-I generally stands for gasser rated synthetic which has lower C rating than HDEO oils.

Lubrication

OldWolf,

When I rant about the Rotella T 5W40 Synthetic in the Diesel there is a DisClaimer:
1.I treat the 5W40 just like it's a Mineral based Lube...3000 Miles and the Oil+ Filter gets changed.
[It's advantage is slightly lower cost and much more of a
Diesel additive package (CAN YOU SAY Zinc?) ]
2.As pointed out earlier, the OIL is the Coolant AND Lubricant for both the
Injection Pump AND the Turbocharger![AND Turbos BEAT the FOOL out of OIL]

DO NOT MIX: BRANDS , VISCOSITY(s) !
Nothing Good can come from "Playing" Petro-Chemist!

The Mobil 1 Truck and Turbodiesel [A.K.A. Delvac 1]is rated for C [Compression]type engines.

I would feel comfortable running 5K oil+ filter intervals with:
Royal Purple,Redline and Delvac 1 WITHOUT oil testing. (O.K. Amsoil Too)

I never had any cranking issues when running synthetic in the winter. The only time I had problems was with 15w40 dino which turned over real slow on those super cold mornings.

You can get that fake synthetic pretty cheap, Rotella T 5W40, which is a good oil and from my experiance with my 300SD still allowed the old 617 to crank over quickly.

After using both I would never run a dino oil in any old MB diesel in the winter.

I used Shell ROTELLA "synthetic" 5w-40 (blue jug) for years in VW and Mercedes diesel best bang for the buck.

IYHO. Some of us prefer "real synthetic".

Mobil 1 5w-40 Turbodiesel is no longer the same as Delvac 1. It used to be the same when it was called Mobil 1 5W-40 "Truck and SUV." I believe they both have the same CJ4 rating, but the additives are different. Delvac 1 is the same formula as the old 5W-40.

It doesn't magically cost less than the new stuff, it's different!

I change oil at home every 3000 miles so I do not need "real synthetic"
