How do I manually turn engine over?
In order to drain the torque converter and adjust the valves (79 300SD) I need to turn the engine over manually with a breaker bar or?????
What method should be used to do this? Car is on the ground or on ramps while service is done. Thanks! Dave Larson 79 300SD |

Use a 27MM deep socket and ratchet. It'll be easiest to use this arrangement from the bottom. You'll quickly learn how many clicks of the ratchet will get you to the next valve.
Good luck, |

turn clockwise
With engine in neutral (obviously) it is not real hard to turn over manually....use regular half-inch drive rachet. Very important..turn engine clockwise as you face front of car. If you turn in other direction, you can cause damage.
This is easier with two people...one to turn while the other looks for the drain plug to match with the access hole. Otherwise, you will need to move a little, go see, move a little more, go see, etc. etc.

I found I was able to feel the torque converter drain plug with the fingers of one hand, while I wrenched the engine over with the other. Trust me, easier said than done, but doable if you feel with the left and push up on the rachet with the right. Naturally this is done laying under the car. Be careful to feel lightly and not pinch a finger tip between the drain plug and tranny housing.

Mark makes a good point for MTs. On an AT, you can turn the engine with the transmission in Park or any gear without added resistance or risk.
