How do I manually turn engine over?

In order to drain the torque converter and adjust the valves (79 300SD) I need to turn the engine over manually with a breaker bar or?????

What method should be used to do this? Car is on the ground or on ramps while service is done.

Thanks! Dave Larson 79 300SD
