ok, outside done for now. Now to finish up the inside areas-

seam sealed-

undercoated-

reinstalled the crappy fender, looks all right, certainly for the winter. No rusted section of the fender touches the repaired section.

also installed the nice 12 dollar klokkerholm fairing piece for the front. Fits pretty well. Way more convenient than dealing with the rusted out original

finally finished, and put a few miles on this thing.

final rust repair pics-

For the throttle pedal, I found this perfect piece of steel kicking around, and just welded it down, then used a file to round out the hole in the pedal, and it worked nicely using a regular nut and bolt instead of the little plastic clip

Inside PORed, seam sealed, and then insulated and everything back in, and buttoned up-

here is the piece I cut out where the pedal mounted-
in the second pic, the pieces with a red line around them are steel that could be welded to, and the blue area is where the pedal was screwed down. Shows you how rotten this area was, the vinyl was so thick that it functioned normally though.

The SLS is definitely a nice ride, though I kinda want 4 wheel SLS, since impacts over front and rear are so different. This is the height it sits after driving-
Over night it sinks down quite a bit, normal?

so I reinstalled the inner fender splash shield, which showed me how off I installed the outer rocker skin. Next year ill cut that out, and drop it a bit to match the fender splash shield. Its too high an angle, angles up too far. I thought it was always just a bit off, but with the shield in, its way more than "a bit". work for after the winter though. Should pass inspection with that ham handed installation.

First wagon complaint-

Man, you have to be about 4 feet tall to comfortably fill the fuel tank on this sucker. You gotta bend way down to pump diesel.

Other developments is I think I'm gonna delete the SLS eventually. Lines are pretty crispy looking, and id like to expand my options on spare motors for this car just in case.

Fixed the rear brakes, front brakes are acting up. These guys pretty much all seized up when it was parked.

keys. Gotta figure this out. Found a bunch of corroded and broken wiring in the aftermarket automatic lock setup (around the rust areas, so looks like a victim of salt and corrosion, typical of the environment in the rust belt.) Just going to remove all of it and start again stock. That leaves trying to get the keys to work in the locks.

The locks haven't been changed, but the key does not turn in some locks from so long not being used. Louis told me they used to work, and they kinda do in the passenger side and glove compartment door, as well as ignition, but not in the tailgate or drivers door.

Any suggestions on lubricants and/or graphite to try and get the key turning? She really needs to be able to lock this car before I hand it over to her

The purists may cringe, but I've had luck freeing up sticky tumblers with WD-40 and gentle key wiggling. Also, the original Mercedes key that came with the car is the valet key. It should work in the doors and ignition but not the trunk or the glove box. The two copy keys were from the master key and should turn everything.

Thanks! ill get it going eventually. May try that and see what happens. Ive also used WD-40 in locks before as well.

The one time the fiance test drove the car so far, she broke that valet key.
Instantly too, was amazing to me. The key was a little cracked and before I could get out "be careful", she broke the end off.

Update is the car passed inspection! repairs are no longer under such a time crunch, now I can take my time and work on stuff with some wiggle room.

Awesome! I'm glad you got it back on the road! Fantastic job on the rust repairs and documentation too! I know I super glued that valet key back together numerous times. I can pick up a new key surround when I get my 190 back. Let me know if you want one. Then dip it in epoxy!!

thanks!

took the key away, I might weld something to it actually. I like the VW symbol keys, would like to make a MB symbol key maybe.

cleaned up well-

rear suspension after being off for about 15min. Steep parking spot has neighbors asking me what the problem is. 3 times so far. Works fine when running, but SLS maintenance is on the horizon

You sound like a vw guy now. I'm not into making the car useless for daily driving

Wall there. Funny setup, my side of the driveway have to pull in to get out, neighbors side has to back in to get out. No deviations unless you are kate moss thin. Hard even then.

Inside the garage the setup is opposite, otherwise no one gets out
