Hazard Light Quirkly Behavior

Hazard light works fine (blinks on and off) for several minutes, then simply stays on. I shut it off, turn it back on, and it works fine for another several minutes, then again stays on.

Any ideas?

Pull the switch, carefully disassemble and clean it of dried grease, coffee residue etc. If you have any dielectric grease hit the sliding contacts with a skim coat.

The blinker relay might be getting tired too.

I had this problem, took apart and cleaned the switch a few times, eventually the relay died too. Found both inexpensively, now all is well, and inspection sticker in my window.

Make sure to check you blinker fluid. That is a classic sign of low blinker fluid. Like stated above check the switch, and clean it, but it sounds more like a relay issue to me.

Finally getting around to dealing with this....having a son learning to drive has a way of motivating me to fix things! As I have identical cars, I can just swap switches or relays to diagnose.

One question out of curiosity (and I'm sure ignorance): How would a dirty switch account for the symptom I describe (blinking for a few minutes then staying on)? Doesn't the switch simply complete the circuit? Doesn't a failing relay more likely account for the symptom?

Thanks.

More than likely a relay. But in some models the relay was built into the switch, so it might be a case of 6 of one/half-dozen of another regarding the advice to clean the switch.

It was the relay. Swapped it out and all is well.
