I saw a quote from Craig, so I know he's posting in this thread- I cannot see spending the money these parts cost for a design flaw. I don't care who built it, it has a design flaw, and the possibility of timing-chain-destroying debris is a pretty damn big flaw.
I'll probably do this swap and post pics, I just need to get another pump.

I have the same Gast in the link!
Gast MOA -V111-JH 6.8 amps That's 84 watts.

The "Vacuum 300TD (Video)" thread above got me thinking about electric vacuum pumps.

They're made for the brakes. As such, the hysteresis is set to a wide range, like 5" Hg (15"-20"). So your transmission is going to get a varying vacuum input at the same foot-feed position.

Pretty much rules out using one of these units on our cars, if you ask me.

I don't know if a 606 timer will slide onto a 603 (or 617) pump.

Do all 606s use this Vacuum Pump or is it only after certain years.

Definitely the turbos. 95s use the lever type. 96-97 are split.

My '96 does not.

I'm not sure an electric vacuum pump would be able to handle my usage. Depending on the terrain, I could be on and off the brakes ten times inside 20 feet, so I would even be giving the stock vacuum pump a real workout, beyond what it's designed to handle. This could go on for a little while, or all day depending on where I am.

The Japanese Diesel engines used an alternator with a splined shaft out the rear that drives a Vacuum pump. It is lubed with engine oil by a small hose.

I have this on my 82 Datsun SD-22 engine.

I tried to copy and paste the pic, but didn`t work, so here you go.

I had one on my Trooper TD, and man is that thing expensive. The alternator by itself was $150 with a $60 core in 2002, it's probably more now. The vacuum pump was not available then, so if you can find one now it's sitting in a junkyard.

Toyota offered a diesel Camry for a few years in the late '80s. Those had a vacuum-pump driven off the back of the alternator
At the shop where I worked until the mid '90s, we needed an alternator for an '87 Camry diesel. All our suppliers kept sending us gas-Camry alternators. Finally, we had to order a new one from the Toyota dealer for more than $300, plus about $100 for the integral regulator that wasn't included with the dealer-alternator.
Good luck finding Toyota-diesel parts today!

Happy Motoring, Mark

Here's the pump as-installed on an 88 7.3:

The line looped up at the top is the vacuum line. There are no oil lines, no connection to the internals of the engine and the pump mounts to a bracket that pivots on two bolts with a square cutout for a 3/8" ratchet to tension it. About as simple as you can get, and I'm sure it will be easy to adapt.

I've seen a belt driven vacuum pump on older mercedes diesels, i think it was a 220D. The pump was mounted on the drivers side right where the power steering pump is on the 617.

The belt driven idea is a good one but I took a quick peek under the hodd and I do not see any room.

The only direction there is any space is where the Power Steering Pump is. A double Pulley could be put on the Power Steering Pump and if you could find a short enough belt the Vacuum Pump could be mounted to the side and slightly under the PS Pump.

Where the Bracket for the V Pump would attach???
