Have you ever approached someone and offered to buy their car?
I asked a woman at the carwash with a w201 diesel in Carrboro. She yelled at me! NO!
Oh well.

ONLY IF I CAN PAY FOR IT......
Only real estate nowadays, not so much cars.
Friends of mine knocked on doors to buy their last two homes. The first home they knocked on the door and bought it for $120K in 1968. Sold it for $3,5000,000 in 2003. Property taxes of $25K+ a year made 'em move crosstown. They knocked on a door of home in 1995 and bought it for $375K. It's worth close to $1,000,000 today. Yes, it pays to knock on doors. The difference today is that people doing it now usually don't have the money to buy what they say they want..lol..cracks me up! A guy at the service station my Mom used to drive her low miles Blazer to for gas, told here to call when she wanted to sell. She did - he didn't have any money. A guy in CA. told me to call him when I wanted to sell my '83 300SD (that one clown who knows who he is claims I never owned.) I did, the doofus didn't even have a friggin' $2,500. Good Lord! The car turned for nearly $5K inside a couple weekends. A gal in Arkansas liked my new '80 Lincoln Town Car so much, she told me to call her when I wanted to sell it. I did 15 years later. She didn't have the $2,500 for it. Anybody notice a pattern in the would-be buyers here? lol Last edited by Skid Row Joe; 11-10-2010 at 11:48 PM. |

I needed a few parts so a note was put under the wiper of a very ratty 400E at the post office. Stated a cash price, condition as-is. Got a call a few days later saying OK. Got what I need and am parting out the rest. Of course, when bottom feeding, don't expect much. I did learn that a car parked in the fire lane may be driven by an a**hole, or alternatively, not have any reverse . I have put notes on others, but not with a price, just with "if you decide to sell this car, please call me". No calls, probably not taken seriously.

I've done it several times with great success. I bought my wife's wagon that way. I wrote a note and left it on the window stating I was looking for a car for my wife- it's what I always say because if I buy a car and it does not meet her criteria I can't buy it- lol. I think it looks better to the buyer also. The sellers were a Doctor and his wife with two grown kids (+ grandkids). The grown kids were fighting over it so they decided to sell it for $3000. One owner with 125K and a huge stack of repair bills from dealers. I did not negociate as I felt they would be insulted and not sell it. It's still the wife's car now with 180K 7 years later.

I do it at least once every two months. Most of the time people consider it a compliment.
On a side note, I often tell people their car is about to die or needs serious work. I do this at stop lights. 100% of the time the response is negative. |

I have left notes more than once. I did get a call and subsequently bought an 82 240d from them. It was a decent car not the best nor the worst I have ever bought. Drove it for four years or so until my kids bashed it so much it needed to be rebodied. So I bought one with a rod hanging out the side of the block and switched the motors and drove it some more.

People try to buy my SD. They try to buy my 78 Datsun Z. Only used car dealers try to buy my 00 Diesel Ram.

I've gotten a couple offers in person, told them no way. I have never made an offer on one.....not really enough of them around here for that to even be possible. I saw the first 240D today in probably 5+ months. There's a few gasser W126's around, some W201s.....a couple W123's........I bet less than 30 of them in the area that I have ever seen.

Once I actually knocked at the door where this '85 Dodge van was parked and asked if they would be interested in selling it. The guy said "Funny you ask, we're selling it but we haven't gotten around to list it yet." They wanted $5000 for it back in 1994, so I thanked him and walked.
On the other hand I've got at least 5 offers for my Caddy. The Benz hasn't gotten any offers as of yet

Well I never made any offers to see if someone wanted to sell their car. But I did say to a lady, "Nice Car". Three weeks later I owned it,.................... she gave it to me . Our 80 240D.
