x2 on compressed air. Since you have the pan off, try blowing air from underneath up. And dont remove any more parts until you take a deep breath and think about all this.

Please have a look at:

http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=11060.msg73940#msg73940

In this case an Allen bolt head was broken off by the owner and went down into the chain case. This bolt head is about the size of the key you've lost down there. He found the bolt head between the lower sprocket and chain.

Do you have a small LED light on rod? Look down there with that and I'll bet you see it, as that's directly below where key would go into the cam - probably where you had it when dropped.

Once you see it, use a strong magnet on a bendable rod (NAPA) and fish it out.

Good luck,

Ron

Fiber optic.

A borescope would allow you to look around in there.... Somebody you know has to have one!

GREAT NEWS!!!! YEP YOU GUESSED IT!

Hi,

I'd had an old bulb... the kind that goes for the parking light on the newer versions of the W115 (the smaller but more powerful ones).... I hooked it on to a thin but strong and bendable wire used the wire itself as a negative line and used another piece of wire warped around it and used that as a positive line connected it all up and sent it in there and yep I saw it (hadn't removed it yet its raining and getting quite dark now and I DO NOT WANT ANY MORE COCK UPS so I'm playing it safe and doing it in the morning) the key is stuck in between the timing chain tensioner at the bottom to where the nut goes (its pivot at the bottom)

Ive decided to make a small yet strong electro magnet so that I can get it to touch the key and then switch on the current which means it wont keep getting caught on to things while its on its way down there.

So yep looking good..... hope everything goes well

Congradulations on finding the key. I've been following your story because I am always dropping nuts or some other small part in the engine compartment and have to fish around for them. I know how annoying it is. Sears sells a strong magnet on a telescoping shaft with a small LED light in the end. This magnet will attract small pieces like your key, from about an inch away. It is one of the most used tools I own.
Vstech had really good idea to wrap the magnet with aluminum foil, because the magnet is so strong it wants to stick to everything ferrous.

actually, my idea is to buy one of the magnet sticks that has a springloaded aluminum shield on it so it only sticks to the part you put it on. but foil if thick enough would likely work too.

I will point out that you can never have enough rags to stick in holes!

Hey! What about one of those bendable flexible spring hooks used for just this sort of problem? No magnets necessary. Napa sells them for cheap. Is it possible to magnetize one of them as well?

heh, just be sure you know exactly how many rags you used and count them all when you are done!
it REALLY sucks to find an overheated car dead from a rag in the radiator, and I've seen it more than once...

I dont think a hook could catch a flat rounded piece.... a nail yes, but I dont think a hook would be very effective

my idea is to get a little nail and wrap a fairly big coil around it and stick one end on to a little tiny pipe and stick the other end on to a flexible wire..... send the nail down there and when it touches the part, then switch on the current and bring it up.

I cant get those where I live..... believe it or not you cant just walk into a hardware and buy a few magnets here... I you want a magnet you have to buy something that has one in it and then remove it from that..... like one of those cupboard magnet things I guess
