I'm still trying to figure out the most economical way of dealing with this problem (can I get a gauge separately or buy whole cluster?). I've also read about guys installing low oil pressure alarms - that I will be doing definitely.
Pick a Part yard. Find an instrument cluster and pull it. Also, grab everything you can store especially cosmetic parts and conveniences. Although, your car doesn't look like it needs much.

I'm drooling.

That`s good you are getting a gauge from Vstech. I know a new one is around the $300 range.

You have three PNP`s in the Portland area, and one in Vancouver, WA. just across the border. I have found some good stuff when I have been up there.

You can pull the whole cluster from a junker for around $45. Each individual gauge is around $16 ea. at least that is the price around here.

As mentioned above, you can get an after market tumbler with keys for around $50, vs the dealer cost of $90.
The draw back of the after mkt one, is, if you loose your keys, how are you going to know how to make a new one? what record is there to cut one? you will have one key to open the door and trunk, which can be replaced using the VIN #. and one odd ball key.

I would recommend to purchase the tumbler and key from the dealer. the key`s are cut/made in Dallas, TX area I believe. then have them to you almost the next day. will need proof of ownership and license etc...

Just got back from the dealership, new lock cylinder should be here Thursday.

So it looks like this thing comes out similarly to some late model VW lock cylinders, in that you insert a pin to release the tab that locks it in.

Should be super easy with the key currently turning properly, right?

Turn key to position I, insert pin, unscrew collar.

Pin size and angled tip are critical. A blunt paper clip won't go in.

It should turn as smooth as butter. However, if it still hangs up, or you have to wiggle the steering wheel back and forth to get the key to turn. You might need one of these......hope not.

this is the Steering Lock Assembly

these run $206.00. but after 28 yrs, things do wear out. I replaced both on the 80 and 85.
