Then after another 45 minutes of jiggling, the key magically turns the lock cylinder. So I called AAA to cancel and off we went. Looks like I'll be busy replacing the lock cylinder in the next couple of days.
I recommend that you deal with this right away....don't risk having it get to the point where can no longer turn the key. Much more expensive.

Nice looking car. As per the Tach, and temp gauge, the engine must be running. I notice there is no oil pressure. the oil pressure is mechanical, an oil line from the engine to the gauge. Is it discinnected at the filter housing?

As far as to the key not turning, there is a ton of write ups on this issue. you need to fix it soon. If the key gets stuck and you can`t turn it, you really have a pita job on your hands.

Don't worry, the car isn't moving again until I fix it. I'm just glad I caught it before the gf started driving it.

actually, they will not pull one off the shelf or anything, they will order one for your car, and it will be in in about a week. if you fear you can't start your car, REMOVE the tumbler NOW and use a wooden tool to turn the ignition until you get your new one!

Good eye, yes the oil pressure gauge is inop. The PO informed me that it had developed a small leak at the gauge. He opted to have the repair shop block it off, rather than purchase a new cluster. It definitely has pressure, though I've yet to throw a gauge on it.

I'm still trying to figure out the most economical way of dealing with this problem (can I get a gauge separately or buy whole cluster?). I've also read about guys installing low oil pressure alarms - that I will be doing definitely.

I think that may be Manganese Brown. I have the same color car and year '83 with 109K miles when i bought it almost 2 years ago. Can I asked you what you paid for her? Yours is in great shape, well taken care of. Do they use salt in the PNW or sand on winter roads?

Hey there Tip.
nice looking ride, congrats.
I just went through this with my new toy.
Call Phil at Peachtree Parts.
He overnited my a new tumbler for $57.
You can see my post named Whoops on 2/10/11 for the gory details of my saga.
I had the key stuck in the "0" postion and had to monkey it out to replace.

good luck

This is price vs. convenience tradeoff.

I believe only the dealer can get you a VIN-matched ignition tumbler, (the price for a W123 tumbler is pushing $90-100, with new key, and it takes a few days to order). The convenience is that you only need the single key for the door/trunk/ignition and your old keys should still work (if not too worn).

You can order a new key+ignition set that will also work just fine, but it won't match your doors. But it'll cost less and can be delivered to your mailbox without schlepping a title and photo ID to the dealer.

With the other eagle-eyes on the cluster: how's the temp? A little over 90 on the cluster seems a bit high for current outdoor winter temperatures. Nothing to worry about yet, but without the oil pressure gauge working and it being a new car, maybe something to watch.

TIP. Nice looking ride! I believe the Mercedes 123 body style is one of the finest looking automobiles ever built! I currently own two. I just returned from a 3 day business trip to Las Vegas from Phoenix (I choose to drive vs fly just to get the opportunity to drive one of my Turbo diesels). They really are fun to drive on the open road. The 126's are a close 2nd in my opinion but all of the old diesel Benz's are great. Get to know your vehicle inside and out. It's a fun journey. You can pick up a Mercedes factory repair manual (CD format) on ebay for around $30. Well worth the price. I also carry the Haynes Automotive Repair Manual [63012 (697)] for the Mercedes-Benz Diesel 123 Series book in my vehicles as a quick reference. Good Luck with your new ride!

I havent seen a huge difference in any of the CD's out there. IMO get any of them that look good to you for now. Start looking for a proper manual ie BOOK with a solid budget in mind. I got extremely lucky and just picked up 4 manuals from ebay in literally 'as new' condition for cheeeeep.
