Hydrulics should work very well, wonder what they did? I am using a two cylinder Wisconsin gas engine with hydostatic drive. 15" gauge.

This was semi-local news a few months ago; try to have stuff like this in mind and be as conscientious as you can when you're working on the thing. Not that I have ANY doubts about your abilities or your carefulness, but when I saw "train in park" this was the first thing that came to mind. http://www.goupstate.com/article/20110319/ARTICLES/110319692

Damn... We are Uber careful when it comes to that. we balance the cars very carfully and dont go fast. we've had a wheel slip off but nothing that bad and we fixed the issue that caused the wheels to fall off. still.... damn I feel sorry for them

Yeah, it was pretty bad. Accusations flying all over the place, everything from "operator was going too fast" to "inspector faked safety inspection report" and all sorts of things. Just a place where corner cutting never pays off. Glad to hear you're proactive about it.

one thing should never be skimped on is safety. there's a kick rail system I installed under the cars in the event that something does tip. It will only tip so far before a tube comes out and punches into the ground and latches there until the car is uprighted again. there's 2 that go in each direction. I never want that to happen!

I am watching this thread closely, as I was a former model railroader. Stuff like this is fun to be involved with, and I envy you for having the opportunity to "Benzify" that locomotive. I think that any engine and trans combo you can come up with will work great. Even the 240 auto should have plenty of power for this application. Gearing it properly will make the engine run at it's optimum speed, and still be safe. Someone, please donate a good running rust bucket so we can see this project working!

You should add the air conditioning system from the 123 just to piss people off (not that you could even use it, whether it is that it is broken or that the train is open air).

I'm building a new engine, It will be mostly Merc parts. Modeled after a SW-1500. I plan on closed cab with AC. Working on the Trucks right now, finding them is proving to be interesting so Time will tell. I will be posting pictures of progress etc. I found a engine for it that will provide lots of power I am doing the scheme in Army. my dad was in the army (drafted) then went Army reserve. so it's to honor the veterans and my father.

I'm a little jealous of your project, I'd love to work on the mini rail road
