The IP on the 603 has an electronic idle control, with that resistor to set a speed. It reads speed off the flywheel and does the rack adjustment you seek. I bet it is pretty responsive (immediate) to changes of load.

Maybe look as this as your governor.

thats a good idea, Im not familiar with the 603, will that IP or parts of it interchange to modify the 617 IP or would I need to fab it by copying the 603 system?

I would like to see how this comes out and all the steps it took you to get their. In my idea ,eventually I would just buy a used 300d cheap with a good motor ,drop the trannie ,then cut and weld the car to install the gen head all in the car.No body needs to know its a yard parker ,even go out and wash it once in awhile so the neighbors dont get suspicious.

heres the initial design. I wanted to keep all of the MB engine isolation and the generator head high. I can come back and use the lower live shaft for more power taps later but this is shown with a 20KW head. I would like to put a second 3PH head on later and perhaps a compressor head to use the rest of the available HP. note the transmount is missing but it will be under the manual bell.

1 hp =750 watts of electric, figure a small loss in transmitting power.

Most generators are 1800 rpm.

I must say why would you use multiple generators, and not just one bigger one? Skip the compressor too, just have enough generator to supply everything. Let the compressor run off electric when needed.

Just my 2 cents worth.

shoestring really is the only answer, I can pick up 10KW heads all day long on craigs with blown gas motors. I have since changed it to a 20KW 120 1PH with provision for a 10-20KW 240 3PH for the garage. compressor was because I have a rotary screw head that requires 15HP to run. its all still in the planning phase........

14hp per 10kW gen (plus a little for losses) plus an intermittent load of say 10HP for the compressor isnt really loading the engine up much. Dont want to be too lightly loaded due to SFC effects and all. It is a neat idea, assuming that the stock cooling system can produce power assuming no windage. Otherwise you might need to series radiators with a boost water pump.

Any updates? I want to do the same thing and go off the grid. Run the engine on WVO.

Hey Army, et al, Howdy,

My days serving uncle Sam in uniform are over. Too many years with my knees in the breeze, but still serving DoD. Thank God I can wake up and serve the USA!

Already spoke to the power company and I can sell up to 20 Kw per hour. So, running a GenSet 24x7 for about 4 days will generate what the household uses per month. Took about 9 months to get the "right" person to verify they have to buy my juice. I can get an extra 250+ gallons of WVO no problem, so yes, OFF THE GRID. Whoever started this thread about running a GenSet off a Diesel Engine, GREAT. Please, pictures, info, or whatever. I am all about sharing information. Want to stop global terrorism ? A great start is to cut off the money. Cut off the money by stop buying OIL. My .02.

I would think a non-turbo would work better living in FL. A OM616 should be on the engine list if your not maxing out the gen set.

never got past the design stage, too many projects too little time. Once I get my garage built I may revisit the idea.

Sell one like this
YANMAR ELECTRONIC GOVERNING KIT - ONAN KOHLER GENERATOR

This is a listing for a 3 piece electronic governing system. This constists of a Woodward/Apecs controller, Apecs actuator and a magnetic pickup. These items list for over $500. Most people sell them for $300+.

The actuator pictured is for a yanmar TNE series engine. It will work for all TNE engine from the small 2 cylinders to the large 4 cylinders. Turn your high-speed engine into an 1800 RPM generator with these items.

This is the manufactureer's literature that I found online - http://www.woodward.com/pdf/ic/52132.pdf
