Interesting responses.
Yeah, we have Jet A but it costs $5.05/ gallon as of last week. But I noticed diesel went up to $4.07 this weekend at the cheap place. Jet A is kerosene that shouldn't gel until Texas freezes over. I have had to add unleaded gas to a truck when it was -25 just east of Pueblo one night. I just made it into Fowler, CO with "gelling" symtoms. That was scary; I carried real cold weather gear after that. Seems like a diesel would do well in a small plane environment where the engine has to run near full power most of the time. That's what we did with truck engines and they ran lots of miles. Yeah, my job is like a dream. Don't supervise anyone anymore, my boss doesn't know what I'm doing, and I get a vehicle to drive. Wish it was a diesel... it's a Chevy Colorado that I think is made by Isuzu. Wonder if they make a diesel version somewhere in the world. r

Isuzu D-Max, small diesel pickup. Very common in Iraq and Afghanistan, as are diesel Ford Rangers and diesel Toyota Hilux. All are sadly not available in the U.S.

I got my Single Engine Land in 1990, flew recreationally for about a year, and realized that you need both time and money to keep this as a hobby. I didn't have either...still don't. Haven't flown in 20 years. back when I flew there were TRSAs and ARSAs.

dmorrison, I had seen you avatar and figured you flew a skybus. Hope you make retirement without incident.
Yeah, flying is expensive. I was going to get current again and fly to Vegas to see my new grandson instead of the 8 hour drive each way. But it's just too expensive to be practical unless I had at least two others sharing costs. Anyway, if any of you are our flying, consider stopping in. r

TRSAs are still around. And they cause plenty of confusion, because they don't "fit" very well with the "new" airspace designations. ARSAs, TCAs, CZs, the PCA and ATAs all got new names. And new airplanes feature TV screens instead of those neat-looking instrument panels! And you don't need to understand navigation anymore; they have this new thing called GPS.

I don't like their design philosophy. To many tails coming off, and the computer only allows you to operate in a very particular envelope. Sometimes when between a rock and a hard place we need to exceed the design limits. Airbus will not let you do that, ever. Boeing limits you but allows you to exceed limits. Mcdonnell Douglas's 1965 design of the MD80 (DC9-80) is fly by wire, their called cables and the limiter on the aircraft is the Captain and Copilot. Besides, the one group of pilots who have crashed more Airbuses than any other group are the Airbus Test Pilots. 4 fatal crashes since the company started. So I'm not really a Airbus fan. Dave

I was his 1st passenger when we were 21 yr. olds immediately after he got his license. He rented a Cherokee 140 at the Millard Airport near Omaha, and flew to Lincoln NE airport. I had no idea how dangerous it was flying with a new pilot. Flew several times with him as a passenger in various prop aircraft when he was a flight instructor at Martin Aviation in Santa Ana, CA. You kind of have to choose your poison. With Airbus you have all the unknowns in the fly-by-wire system. With the 737, you have the chance of it spontaneously becoming a 737 Cabriolet Edition.

I flew back to the States from Kuwait in a DC-10. I was surprised that there are any of them still in service. I can't remember when they last made them. The flight to Kuwait was in a C-17. Not the greatest aircraft for comfort, but it beats a C-130. I was rather impressed when I was a passenger on a Blackhawk. We flew low, followed the ridgelines, and got into some seriously banked turns. The view was incredible. As far as commercial, I'm rather partial to the Dash 8's that I sometimes take to Seattle for business.

I have had the chance to own and fly the following
Extra 300, Cap 231, Cap 232, Edge 540, F-16, J-3 Cub, Pilatus Porter, Rearwin Speedster, Mistu "Zero"..............Oh sorry you guys are talking "Full" sized aircraft! Sorry couldn't help myself. The in person facial expressions are usually very amusing! We have over 50 aircraft from 12 inch to 103 inch wing spans. Would love to fly full scale but until my son becomes an aerospace engineer, it will have to wait. No BS on the engineer part. |
