I highly doubt this...
but now that I think about it, my 79TD did this, I had to floor it to engage the downshift button to get it to start in first... something about the torque and the low rear gearing and eliminating idle creep at a stop light...

Want to be faster off the line in your 240D? No problem.

1). Attach a good sized used tire securely to your rear bumper.
2) Enlist the assistance of your wife, or a good friend as a driver.
3). Put your recruited driver behind the wheel of this truck (see attached video) or a similar one.
4). Attach this truck to the tire that you previously attached to your rear bumper.
5). Find a starting line of your choosing.
6) Put your 240D in neutral, and fasten your seat belt.
7). Enjoy the RIde!

The best you should realistically be trying for is to get the car to perform as originally intended. This includes the mechanical things listed above, plus you'll want to test your injectors if there is any doubt about their condition, and rebuild or replace if needed. Also, you want to make sure that your fuel and air filters and fuel tank strainer are not restricted. The tank strainer tends to be a once a decade thing at most. The others may need replacing as often as every few months if you drive a lot. Keep in mind that a 240D running the way it should has a 0-60 time somewhere in the ballpark of 20 seconds. If that isn't good enough for you, it's probably better to just get a different car.

Let me take this opportunity to suggest once more... that one of the things ALMOST NEVER CHECKED with regards to putting a 240 back to stock working order... is the cleanliness of the Tiny Radial Holes in the PRECOMBUSTION CHAMBER which direct the atomized ( hopefully ) fuel onto the top of the piston area..... this is where the action is... the injectors can be perfect, the pintle can be great... and then these holes be clogged by decades of being where the action is and mess up everything....
Do not use a drill to ream them out... probably some kind of solvent would be best...
and there are different sizes .. which may up the power.... so you need to compare what you have with the upgraded hp model precombustion chambers....
I think the tool for pulling them is available for loan in the section of the forum...

wouldn't a diesel purge take care of this?

(i'm definitely NOT an expert here and am genuinely interested in this advice.)

This depends on the year and model I think. I know early 300d's started in 2nd gear and behaved as you describe. I'm not sure any 240d's did and later model 300d's went to a 1st gear start at some point. That second gear start is good in snow. My wife loved her 77 300d in the snow for exactly that reason, even though she didn't know that was the reason she loved it in snow.

On this car I know it applies as I drove the car in question for a year and a half.

Go buy a 300SD and put your 240D badge on it.

In all honesty, adjusting the linkage and valves is huge for performance. Other than that, having a rebuilt drivers seat and good suspension makes driving a 240D much more enjoyable. If you're going to move slowly, it should be in comfort.

have one to prove it too. I do not think what we have done comes under the term "simple" though, at least not for most people. Remember this was in the first post as a requirement. Wonder how the poor fellow who messed up pulling the rack limiter is doing? Hope he has it squared away.

One obvious solution if it is a large issue to the owner and the 240d is fundementally sound.

A transplant of the transmission, engine and rear end from a five cylinder turbo model obtained cheaply. Especially because of accident or rust but mechanically good should do it.

Really the automatics in combination with the 240d engines really present no ball of fire.
