TheDon Bought a 240D

1982 240D 4 speed with 309k miles and a trunk triangle to boot!

No rust, just some small spots here and there. Engine runs well(I think it does), transmission shifts decently(I've never driven stick before), AC works, sunroof works, all 4 windows go down via the hand crank.

I think it has a vacuum leak somewhere and the ignition key only works in the ignition.Front right door will not catch all the way. Interior needs to be cleaned up and drivers seat replaced. I also suspect the fuel tank sender may be gunked up since I drove it home almost 180 miles and the needle did not move.

I have never driven a 240D and boy is everyone right. They are slow but the 4 speed helps.

This is the replacement for my step dad's Aveo that bit the dust. I just need to clean it up, replace engine mounts, make sure the suspension is good, engine is strong, etc.

But, I do like it. I also named it Pancakes.

You need a maple air freshener. Nice find.

Thanks, a forum member here tipped me off to it.

Tuesday I will diagnose the vacuum system, inspect everything and make a list of what needs to be done, pull the tank sender and clean it. I don't even know if it marks its spot. Probably does. I'm just pretty damn impressed I drove it home.

Nice acquisition! Should look really nice next to the 300D . Sounds like pretty typical maintenance issues. The door not catching all the way is from the block mounted on the frame, there is a plastic piece on the bottom (right below the hole) that gets brittle and either crushes, disintegrates, or snaps off. I've found that a piece of wire duct taped on is a good substitute for the broken-off plastic piece, all my doors close right now. I can take a picture if this doesn't make sense. Run a few tanks of StarTron/SolTron (same thing) in there and it should help with the gunked sender.

I'm going to pull the sender tuesday. I've cleaned them before. I really like this car. It's fun. If there was a cheap 240D club I just barely missed membership.

Looks good Joe. You got a deal on it!

What color is that? Hard to tell... Some pics it looks like Light Ivory, some it looks Manila Beige

240D's are fun. Very, very simple cars.

Ignition key only works in the ignition is a common happening - the lock cylinder was probably replaced with a used one. Pretty easy to remedy with a call to the dealer.

Manual climate control? Sounds like you got a major deal!

Looks like you already have a possible culprit for the vacuum issue.

I saw a thread here where a member fixed the door issue by screwing a panhead screw in where the tab used to be on the striker block.

yeah. I need to figure out which hose to get and to test the vacuum system. The door locks do not go down with the key (Its the correct key btw)

We determined that Joe's motor is not the original one. Notice the cruise actuator, there is a no stalk inside. Also note the VCV on the IP, a car with a manual doesnt need a VCV haha

yep.. So it may actually have less than 309k on it. We also found out the options code have "820 FOR TOURIST USE" which I find interesting.

I have some work to do on this car. Nothing I cannot handle.
