190D engine ticking when warm...

After being driven by 2 teenage boys... and probably flogged... I got my 195k mile 190D back.
Now I notice an engine tick when its warm.
Oil pressure is good, and from a listen it sound like a loose valve clearance, but these 601's have hydraulic adjusters.
I think its due for an oil change, but while I am under the hood I wanted some ideas on what to look for.

Try some Mobil1 synthetic 5w40 and see if it goes away. Any other remedies get progressively more expensive.

Lifter.

Both mine tend to have valvetrain noise when hot. I find it is worse, actually, with the thinner synthetic oil. Time for a new tappet or twelve.

The lifters can be tested. More than likely the problem is low oil pressure on a particular one. What cylinder is the noise coming from?

You could use a long screwdriver on the valve cover, blade down and ear to the handle to see if you can identify the location of the noise. Of course you could use a mechanics stethiscope if you own one, they are inexpensive at Harbor Freight Tools.

It might be the belt tensioner damper. Lean a piece of wood on it while the engine's ticking to see if the sound muffles.

Ditto w/ sixto.

Check front of the engine @ all belt contact points first.

Then start saving up for an entire set of new lifters. -If they make noise when cold, then they're just getting old... but if they make noise and are hot... they're more than likely shot. (assuming a good oil pump)

The tappets really are called by the right name ,every 2.5 or 2.2 Ive seen have had the noise after 120k plus .It requires the replacement of the part and for a 2.2 it shouldnt be anymore than $500 plus parts.I second the advise also on the belt tensioner ,youll mostly here the noise come and go along with the belt noise if the bearing is on its way out. These run around $30 or $15 for just the bearing ,theirs 2 different sizes so bring your old one in to match.Ill love it when my 2.2 gets to the point where all the peskey noise issues under the hood are removed ,its probably the reason most people give up and sell these cars ,its not big mechanical issues ,just sounds like one.I believe their also called " cam followers".

VEE Dub.

Aren't there some VW TDI tappets that are a direct replacement, and considerably less expensive?

The ones spec'd for the 60x series can be had for $20 or a skosh less.

$200 for a full set on the 5 cyl.

INA is OE for other german makes... not sure for MB.
