280 SL with 617Turbo Diesel on Ebay

He has a real story behind this pitch. Yup, only $55,000 to buy it now and that includes a lot of bull!

"A racing quality gap seal ring is used in the piston head which causes the pressure on the compression ring to be equalized reducing the pressure differential to 0 which in turn reduces blow-by and increases power."

What the heck does this mean?

When I read that "Blitzzy" ad I thought back to the time when we said, if "BS" was music, he'd be a brass band!

I think it means roughly the same thing as:

"ion implanted friction reduction coatings"

Well.... another restorable W113 bites the dust.

It was probably cheaper to put a used/rebuilt/remanufactured in a shed OM617 motor and transmission in the car than to properly rebuild the M130 motor and related fuel injection, plus the old fluid coupling transmissions can be very costly to rebuild as well.

Anyone else notice the non working tachometer? Fancy that, since it's cable driven, I guess the new owner can spring some serious coin to convert it to electric and then figure out how to wire it up.

No mention if the underdash a/c works, probably just needs a hose or two and a quickie charge.

Even if the price was right, I don't see the attraction for this Frankenstein. Fuel costs and mpg are going to be about the same as with the M130 drivetrain, and the car is just a bodyshell in the eyes of a purist who might want to buy it later.

I especially like the reference to the "Storied Diesel Research Labs". I think it means that they're making up a story...not sure. Not even a web site for this "storied institution".

Check out the LinkedIn page for Wolfgang Fengler - http://www.linkedin.com/pub/wolfgang-fengler/21/a0/3b7

I love the web site for TriboCoating. Especially the Diesel Research menu item which doesn't work!

My favorite, though, is the description for the Quartz Energy 9000 Oil

Two years of development made it possible to formulate this 100 % synthetic lubricant . Exceptionally fluid, TOTAL QUARTZ ENERGY 9000 0W30 is an universal and multipurpose lubricant. The upmost top of the range of TOTAL traditional technology oils garanties the immediate lubrification of your engine components : choose the lubricant offering the wildest carmakers homologation profile !

Even Dilbert couldn't come up with "wildest carmakers homologation profile".

The ebay ad will be gone shortly... I tried to capture it for posterity - came close, but it got flagged as a "web forgery"... makes sense, so I'll try to post a .pdf later.

hmmmm
"a fool & his money are soon parted" comes to mind.
Does the "Quartz Energy" give it some special aura?
Maybe it was a back up for "Back to the future" ?
How many lb of crack does it come with?

For the amount of money invested into it, the engine looks like it was pulled straight out of any 82-84 300D/CD/SD. They were willing to spend $2000 on the crank but they wouldn't take the effort to run a buffer over the valvecover?

My money is on a fake bidder "winning" it.

It's a brand of oil.

From that website link page:

"FLUIDITY" - it flows. Really?
"The upmost top" - or do you mean utmost top, or just how high can this go?
"garanties" - spell check 101
"lubrification" - we've all had a kick at this one already... how to stretch a word
"wildest carmakers homologation profile"
"carmakers homologations broader spectrum"
"the larger homologations spectrum" - do you mean "range of manufacturer approvals"?
"guaranting" - not there yet...
"low volatile" - thank goodness, we wouldn't want it to explode
"and forgot about winter" - OK, I already did, now what?
"Especially elaborated additives" - I think this is the crux of 9000's investment in a some stock oil
"catalyc converters" - gotta get mine converted to this!

"Discover our whole range of lubricants" - as in... .personal ones too? I think not.

TIP OF THE DAY:
"Not only do lubricants protect engines from wear, transmit power and facilitate gear shifting, they also contribute to fuel economy." - failed to mention they also permit an an engine to rotate.

And if you check the 'legal' page, get this:

"This information is believed to be correct" - they're not sure though.

I think what has happened here is a poor translation of a legitimate French oil company's product. If you chase down TOTAL there seems to be a wide range of oil products, some even for diesels. Not the 9000 tho. Seems to be a gasser oil for low temp regions.

Say what you want, despite the marketing hype it's actually a very good oil.
