722.315 VS 722.303

hi guys

as to my knowledge, w123 300cd has 722.315 tranny
w126 300sd has 722.303

for .303 I know it's electronic but not sure about .315..is it mechanical?

basically is there any other 722.xxx tranny that will fit '84 300sd?
(without too many mods course...)

regards

.

I believe the 126 has electric speedometer whereas the 123/124/201 has technical drive so the trans from the cd is mechanical. Epc says 303 and 416 (I think) we're used on the sd.

The .315 I have in my garage is mechanical

I'd like to have the confidence to say that all 722.315s are with mechanical speedos but after I learnt that the 722.118 has a throttle linkage for cars pre-1979ish with no vacuum modulator but post 1979ish they've got no throttle linkage and are vacuum only...

...Mercedes transmission naming / numbering conventions seem to be "whatever they felt like at the time"! Anything could happen - they could all be purple and come from Mars...

I've got a spare 722.118 a 722.120 and the spare 722.315...

...nothing like being safe eh?

Seriously if you want the oil cooler hoses go and ask the dealer for a price. If I remember rightly they weren't too too bad...

Otherwise there's often a few for sale on ebay.

Oh I complete agree the prices can be silly - but then sometimes people just don't check and assume that ebay will be cheaper (for example).

I learnt the hard way with my transmission oil cooler lines - I bought them online from the USA - got stitched up by the Dutch customs for import taxes and could have saved 2 euros buying them at the dealer! And I would have got them quicker...

All I'm saying is that you only have to ask and if the price isn't right say "thanks for the information I'll get back to you" - I'm quite sure they're used to people not ringing back! If you don't check - you don't know.

The electric vs mechanical speedometer, shift linkage, and the neutral safety switch are the only differences that I can remember. You basically need a trans from an SD, or you are in for some major work. Mach4 did a how-to here on the DD forum for using a mech speedo trans in a elec speedo car. The tail cones are NOT interchangeable. He also did a NSS wiring mod on his SL Diesel swap thread. I am not sure how to deal with the shifter linkage lengths.

.303's are, well, can be, difficult. Not sure why they used that thing.
