Condenser fan is probably ok. I thought it should be on when the compressor is on but that is apparently not true.

It's been converted to 134A. Hooked up manifold gauge set and got 30 psi on both high and low side.

What should I do next?

And also if you have a 124 300TD you want to get rid of.

I called him up and he gave me a refresher re-charge course (so I don't screw it up).

Put in a little under 2 cans (12 oz cans) of 134a and it is cooling! Not sure if these are good pressures 40 psi low side, 250 psi high.

This depletes my stash of 134a. I do have 6 cans of Envirosafe hydro carbon refrigerants which I may try if the 134a leaks out. I need to buy a leak detector to find the leak spots before it all leaks out.

Once you repair any leaks, flush the system and convert it back to R12.

This car still amazes me how clean it is. Take a look at the door hinges, they look like it just came off the show room floor. I see stickers on the windshield for car detailing. They must have brought it in regularly for detailing, otherwise it cannot be this clean.

that white stuff on the hinges is silicone lube...
wash that crap off there, and get the proper grease gun tip for the hinges!
notice that you have original door checks in there. are they all working smoothly? if not get them yanked out before you break one and jam your door open!

I sprayed a little bit of white lithium grease on the hinges. Is that what you are seeing? What is a proper grease gun tip and what is the proper grease? The lithium grease aerosol can splatters like when you have the runs and makes a mess. The door checks are working wonderfully. They are smooth, makes no noise and stop on both detents and hold the door in their respective positions perfectly.

The condenser fan is working when the system gets up to temperature.

see the little hole in the center of the hinge?
that's got a spring loaded ball bearing on it, you go to the store, and get a grease pin tip, insert it to the hole, and put in moly grease, or synthetic grease. small guns are available as well, for such a small job as this!

Wow! I never noticed that grease hole! I think I have a small grease gun for it. Just have to find it.

It is still cooling well so the 134a hasn't leaked out yet! I'll check vent temps later.

I want to buy a leak detector to find and fix the slow leaks before it all leaks out again. What is a good leak detector to get for 134a? Are the Ebay electronic units any good? Are there any to avoid?

I am going to use this thread to keep track of everything I do to this car. I washed it and it looks amazing! When it's shiny it looks nice it is actually an attractive color. It's a light grey and looks like the color of a porpoise. Should I name her Flipper? Any other suggestions for a name? I have never named a car before maybe this will be the first. Anyway I will wash it again and wax it then take some good pics with a real camera.

I took some glow plug mill volt readings at idle on a cold engine idling for 3 minutes.

They are:

#1 4.8 mv
#2 4.5 mv
#3 4.4 mv
#4 4.9 mv
#5 5.6 mv

It looks like the mechanic who drained and flushed the tank, changed the strainer and adjusted the valves did not do a very thorough job for the $275! Besides pinching 2 wires under the valve cover which caused a bad oil leak and and another weird oil leak into a wiring harness, I found there was vacuum in the tank when the fuel cap was opened. He did not check the vent. I took out the bell vent and found it was clear. I blew the line out with compressed air and it appears to be clear for now. I put the vent back with a short section of clear line so I can see if any gunk settles there.

I also put a section of clear line at the cigar hose. There is some air bubbles there so there is a leak somewhere in the fuel system. I'll have to chase that down next.

Found my small grease gun with the cone needle tip. Works great on the hinges!
