Since you have 2 other SDLs, maybe this one can host an AMG 6 liter DOHC monster and fly under the smog check radar

Agreed. I'd try to fix it. Or at least take it apart far enough to determine what damage was done. A new chain & rails is not that expensive, nor are bearings (if necessary). And that's all DIY stuff.

Otherwise, I second Sixto's vote for a DOHC 6.0L powerplant transplant. Preferably M119 based.

Anyone else wondering if there is any correlation to changing the oil the night before the engine died? Did something accidentally fall into the engine while filling it?

I just restored 1 SDL ( #22 head ) and is running and have it registered. It has been no-op for the last 4 years. The other SDL is also a no-op. It is running but I think the head gasket is flaky. Now this repainted one is a door stop. So my fleet is not in a very healthy state. I am pondering on what to do, may be getting a CDI or 335d, and getting rid of all these rust-free door stops.

I think at 306K miles the oil pump chain may have just been worn out.

Yikes, that's a nasty failure. Yea, must have been something got in and jammed the pump.

Strip down the block and use it as a cool planter. Thats what I have done with my dead soldiers, looks pretty cool lined up against the barn!

Best of luck with the swap. It is big/heavy stuff with tons of fasteners, but pretty straight forward stuff to work on.

There's always a 606 turbo swap but that's $$$. Not that a 6 liter M117 or M119 is cheap.

if you have others and this one is down and done i'd do a swap also... but do it on the cheap...... LS1's are cheaper and cheaper every day with endless options for upgrades.

true but i've seen many benz's with SBC in them. It's a solid engine for a ton cheaper than a menz motor with the same power would be.

Just offering another option.

No gas engine, Period. I am sold on diesel or alternate fuel.

I am looking at all my options. I have never done an engine R&R or a rebuilt. Like everything in life, there is always a first time.

A 300SDL would need one heck of a lift kit installed in order to squeeze a 3.9 cummins 4BT under the hood. I have a little experience with the 4BT.

Try to turn the sump pump and it is rotating freely. So it is a mystery as to what caused the chain to snapped. Chain fatigue at 306k miles?

Would like some info on what need to be changed if I try to pull and rebuild the engine. What would have been damaged when there is oil in the sump, just not circulating. Engine was restarted for about 5 minutes then seized-ish - now it is hard to turn.

1) piston rings
2) rod bearings

anything else? I can take my time to do it as a learning exercise. I have the space, time and a little know-how.
