Injector Pump Replacement Time:

Well, it would seem that the old IP in my 300SD is saying goodbye. I guess with roughly 1,309,000 miles on the pump itself, I cannot blame it.

At 1, 244,000 I rebuilt this engine/transmission complete. Liners, pistons, cam, followers, valves, guides, even the bushing for the IP drive were replaced. The idle was great on the old IP until about 1,275,000 when I picked up a shake at idle. My 617.950 IP was an early model without a rack damper, so I installed a rear plate and damper which smoothed things right out.

Recently, I started picking up this intermittent shake at idle that would come and go, and if I lay my foot on the throttle, it will go away. I had a new rack damper in the package, so I installed it earlier this week. I started the engine with the damper loose and it almost rocked itself out of the car!

A full turn of the damper after contact smoothed the engine right out, which is a bit much, since usually, on a good IP, 1 flat will do the job.

I asked in a previous post for some So Cal shops that are familiar with our pumps. To that end, I wanted to ask what you gentlemen are actually paying to have a pump refurbished.

I am looking at three options at present:

1. Lower mileage used IP

2. Replacing all the wear parts myself and then paying for the calibration

3. Having the rebuild and recalibration done by a shop

Naturally, cost will dictate, to a large degree, my course of action, but your input is valued.

Thanks, Robert

A good used one is the Cheapest way to go.
On eBay they seem to be selling for around $250-$325.
I don't know what the local Junk Yard is asking for them but I am guessing it is less than the ebay price.
You can cleraly buy a bunch of used IPs for the cost of a rebuilt one.

Definitely looking at the used option. I will eventually send the spare out for a full rebuild when $$$$ permit...

Option #1 seems to make the most sense. Just had to respond after seeing your signature and having a good laugh.

I'm sure the MB engineers planned on the IP running with an 80 degree thermostat. You've clearly overstressed it. I guess your "5 years of racing experience" finally bit you in the arse.

Maybe throw a can of 'IP Restore' in there????

Remember the engine rebuild in a can that JC Whitney used to sell that gave you 'magic pellets' to drop down in the cylinders to replace worn metal to the rings????

70,000 on the complete rebuild, with new nozzles and injektors set to high end of specification.

I have an injektor knock on #1 cylinder which I can eliminate by raising the idle to about 900. I can also alter the calibration of #1 element and make the noise go away, but this induces a roughness in the engine.

What this tells me is the IP calibration isn't too far off and I now suspect I have a bad nozzle.

Keep in mind we used to 'calibrate' the Chrylser-Nissan Diesel, with an almost identical pump, with the engine running as bench calibration just never seemed smooth on those engines.

What nozzles are you guys having good fortune with????

By the way, at 950-1000 rpm, the engine sounds just like a gas motor. No noise at all above idle or under load.

Torsionbar,

Where do you get them?

Fired it up this morning @ 45°F ambient.

Car is as quiet as a gas V8 when first fired up cold. As it warms up, you can pick up the sporadic clackity-clack of the injektors, not at all rythmic in nature. The noise if most pronounced on #1 and goes away completely at anything above 900rpm.

After a good warm up, I am going to replace the belts, turbo drain tube seals, rubber rings in the intake elbow, new baby-blue 'O' rings on the turbo inlet reducer cone, both fuel filters and #1 injektor with a known, good used replacement.

Maintenance time!!!!!

Just shot some video of the noise and how it disappears just above idle. Will shoot more video later after repairs have been made.

Granted, I think I still need to replace the IP, but these are things I can do until the new IP arrives....

Pulled #1 injektor. Nozzle has an extended tip, with squared edges, with a orifice in the end.

My spare injektor, from a running 617.952, has a rounded tip, not nearly as extended.

Different design it would seem???

68,000 mile injektors built in 1997 by me on the RIGHT

Known good used injektor from 617.952 on the LEFT

What is the difference and does the design really make a difference?????
