If that "Plywilevy" doesn't have power steering, I'd hate to try and maneuver in any off-road situation.....

or as my dad used to say "Steering by Armstrong"

Absolute crap

for parts 1984 mercedes 190 DIESEL 5speed rare
Went to look at this as a parts car for my 190. The guy was a kid going off to a technical college to become a mechanic (though he obviously knew nothing about cars) and bought the car 2 months ago from a used car lot salesmen through Craigslist. The car stopped running and he put it on Craigslist. Originally it was $1200, then he got it running again apparently and raised the price to $2000, then it stopped running and from there it dropped in price until it hit $800. We decided to go have a look at it because it had a rare Henna Red interior (ours is Medium Red but we could have either dyed that stuff or sold it and the 5 speed manual). We knew from the pictures that the driver's seat was worn, ugly crappy headlights and the paint was terrible (the worst paint job I have ever seen, looks like it was probably $.97-a-can silver Krylon). There was rust everywhere on the outside and in the trunk, engine bay. The interior was in just as bad shape, except for the back seat and passenger seats which looked to be in good shape (so if you need henna red seats, he has them). All the glass was OEM which was one other positive about the car. We jumped the car with our car to see if we could figure out what was wrong and literally none of the electronics worked when they had power going to them. The starter did nothing so we investigated that then I was thinking maybe the engine was seized so I checked the plastic neck for the upper radiator hose and sure enough it had broken off so the engine must have overheated. We were considering offering him a few hundred for the transmission but seeing how neglected the rest of the car was, we decided it wasn't worth it. So if you need any parts and are in the area, the rims looked pretty good (tires were dry rotted), you have the rare interior pieces (only passenger and rear seat worth anything), good glass, and maybe the transmission and all its required pieces would be fine. We noticed that the feel of the weight and strength of the doors and other parts in our 190 (an 87) were much higher quality and much less flimsy. Having heard complaints about the W201 feeling cheap, maybe it was just the early ones.

Anyone who paints over the anodized aluminum on a Benz should be beaten properly!

I felt bad for the owner. He obviously dind't know a thing about cars and I'm sure he paid more for the car than he was asking. If he knew anything about cars he wouldn't have ever bought that pile of junk. Makes me appreciate my 190 even more even though it isn't in the greatest of shape.

I see this a lot. Someone buys a car and they think they got something special. After realizing how much is wrong with the car, they list it for more than they paid to get some sort of profit. When I look at the car, I tell them what is wrong and offer about half what they are asking. I usually get an insulted look and told how much the car is worth (to them). 10 months later, I see the same car listed for half the asking price.

I think I might offer the guy $250 for the tranny and all parts associated with the manual conversion plus a few interior bits and a relay I need. It would be a gamble and a ton of work to remove it but I think it could be worthwhile.

Love how this guy lowered the wagon and put "good" wheels on it. NOT.

That squat job ain't really so BAD, providing the mods are good quality and not hackish. A little T:eek::eek: low for my tastes, but to each his own. And those are period correct BBS one piecers. Not uber-rare, though they've been known to fetch a few dollars. Does the 124 wagon have the same characteristics as the 123 when the SLS is deleted? I realize scootin that low has already just about destroyed ride quality, but say if it was standard height?

IMO the only turd quality is the rust. Maybe the reason he dropped it on the ground. Hehe

Gonna say 1500-1600 max. At minimum it's a driveable parts donor.

And no, I did not send it.

I realize you didn't send that e mail, but whomever did is crossing a line. Their threat isn't part of banter back and forth that could be considered joking, it is a single directed threat against the car owner.

Car makers spend millions and years in design studios to get things "right" so making a one off at home is going to be difficult. The rear is uninspired but the front looks like a Euro car with a bit of split bumper 70 1/2 Camaro RS thrown in. The lower sides could use some sculpting and better wheel opening angles but I don't consider it truly awful.

I'm not into that kind of car but I do look at all modified cars for interesting design elements. Besides, these cars aren't exactly national treasures worth millions so no great loss or gain.

Look at cars from the past that were considered radical departures from the norm. The 30's Chrysler Airflow was deemed the Pontiac Aztec of it's time , the 40's Buick Wildcat show car was considered way out there. Looking at them now they are not considered too far out there.

The is also the constant cry that cars today all look the same and cars from the era that one grew up in all looked different. When growing up one has more time to look for fine details that make cars look different, as time passes one stops looking at the fine details. As an example, look at the radiator grille of a 1928 Chevy , Ford and Dodge , they all look the same to someone that isn't familiar with them.

Aesthetic automotive design is a tricky thing, it must appeal to a wide ranging audience in the span of 10 seconds and keep the attention of a smaller sub set for 4 + years.
