It's sad when you have to crop the HHR out of the picture.

That's not a terrible price considering ten times the asking price gets you a used BMW X6 which is just as ungainly.

I love the "If it doesn't sell by Friday, I'm raising the price" crap a lot of these dealers pull. If you want to sell a vehicle quickly, you ask a low price for it. Why would you ask a low price, then hike it up for no reason other than it happens to be Saturday. It's just one of those cheap sales pressure points most of these shady dealers use to sucker someone in. My response to something like that is: "You can keep the car on Friday, Saturday and the rest of your life because I ain't interested!"

With all the work of putting the engine back together, this is a $500 parts car. I saw an SDL not long ago that was running and driving listed for less.

Agreed, it's a parts car or a possible transplant winner but only if the interior is as stated. <---HIGHLY DOUBTFUL. But this individual is a couple brain cells from clinical retardation and will never let it go for $500. Instead choose to argue his case with "this part alone is worth a grand" or some such. Just ignorant and lazyyyyyy...Sheeeesh

I tell ya, been watching what I consider a disturbing trend grow amongst the populace recently and online classifieds serves as a microcosm of sorts to the bigger picture. I'm referring to the pandemic-like accretion of DUMB! Idiocy, stupidity, ignorance, whatevs... Shining example right here with this '87 SDL.

Who thinks to sell a car with the engine torn apart? It's not a '32 highboy or a Shelby Cobra. BTW why IS the head off? According to you "When running, car ran and drove great!" I don't even need pictures at this juncture. Already stole a minute of my life. OK I might go down there to check n make sure no one left any jewelry or rare coins under the mats. Naaaaaaahhhh, can't be THAT stupid, can they?

So now subtract cost of a tow from offer. Hey, maybe he adjusted his asking accordingly. Right. Nahh, no thought at all going on in there. From the lack of planning with whatever engine issue sprung up to "hmmmm, this looks to difficult/pricey to continue, maybe I'll just put it up on craigs n offload it to a "Mercedes Enthusiast."" MFW!, pull your head out and go back to school. You must acquire the fundamentals first before moving on.

Just like 95%+ of the garbage that gets posted on their servers, it only succeeds in being wasteful. (n spreddin mo stooopidipidee)

Does anyone else remember when craigs was useful?

MBZ123,

You are right. The engine was taken apart (presumably) as a result of some sort of failure. I for one would loathe the task of un-f@ck1ng someone else's head gasket/whatever they were doing job. For that I expect a very low starting price. Not pay the price of a running and driving car but also have to assemble it.

1979 300D mercedes 113k - $500 (scotts valley)

Parts Car. This car was in great running order with only 113k miles! However, I accidently dropped the top 10mm nut from the top of the air filter cover into the intake. The nut fell into the head and through the open valve onto the piston. It was then forged into the piston. I've stripped the engine down and pulled the head off. The #3 piston now has a big dent in it. The head and valves are miraculously unharmed. Prior to the incident the car ran and drove great, no issues. I don't have the time or money to put into rebuilding this engine, an am selling it as a parts car. The body has some major cancer, real rust issues! Was a new Jersey car. I haven't even put it in my name yet as we just bought the thing a few weeks before I killed it. However, it does have a clear title and current registration. I'd rather not part the car out if i can help it. Please e-mail, call or text if interested. I have spotty reception here so if you call PLEASE leave a message- I'll get back to you ASAP! Asking $500. Located in Felton (by Scotts Valley) in the Santa Cruz mountains. Will obviously need to be towed!
GOOD:
everything mechanical except the #3 piston.
Head
Fuel injectors, etc
Front bumper
Front Grill
Front hood, fenders trunk lid
Front doors
Back seat, interior door panels
Temperature controls
AC works
BAD:
#3Piston
rear doors- rust
rear quarter panels- rust dented
rear bumper- rubber has been hit
windshield cracked
front driver seat worn
dash cracked

Yep that really SUCKS! But I wonder why he wouldn't remove the manifolds and use a magnetic wand in an attempt to fish it out? Did he think if he ran it, it would magically disappear? Sad if it did only have 113k on it would have been a nice motor....interior is newer so I wonder?? Doubt he'll get his asking...

97 SL320 03-27-2013 10:56 PM

The valve pocket just below the nut crater looks like it was hit by something.

This motor can run again with that piston, gven the condition of the car. I'd remove the nut, check that cylinders valve for sealing, pull the pan and inspect the rod bearing. ( When something impacts the piston it can damage the bearing in the long term. )

resto108 03-28-2013 01:39 PM

I'd put it back together and drive it. Long term isn't in this car's future!

Even if a Poet Laureate wrote the description, a Pontiac Aztek, no matter the condition, always has a place on this thread.

Those that know these cars and how few were produced

Seriously, let's not waste each others time."

How can you drive this and have any decency at all?
