Hydraulic pump on front of engine

Hi, I'm in the middle of a brake job and waiting for parts so decided to tackle some other obvious problems. I am new to the Mercedes Benz, but enjoying the way things are put together (and come apart). Problem right now is the finned cover on the pump that I think is for the hydraulic suspension is not seated onto the circular 'tuna can' part of the pump. It is obviously not in working order and that isn't the concern for now. I cant tighten the allen head bolts enough to get the cover to come up against the rest of it. I can pull all the bolts as they all backed out. I would like to seal it up with polyurethane gasket sealer or something. The engine is very greasy and dirty and I'm afraid crud has gotten in the pump. There is no sign of leakage at the pump as I think it is dry inside. So..... Here's my question. Can I pull the cover off, or the whole pump witout having a sprocket fall off inside the engine or a bunch of parts that wont go back in? Is there a rubber impeller in there or gear drive or what. Just dont want grit in there to seize the unused pump and lock up the timing chain. Don't see any service info in the chiltons or a search here. Sorry for such a long post.

I figured out it's called the SLS pump so I searched again and saw youtube video and now I know a lot more about it. Can I remove it and run without it? Anybody done that? I just desmogged my '85 landcruiser with the help of a cruiser site and took off about 30 lbs of un needed stuff. Really cleaned up the engine compartment and no smog pump to seize, which they do. On the landcruiser, we just 'gut' the smog pump as it's still needed for belt tension. Gut the SLS pump?

If you pull the SLS pump, you won't have any lift in the rear of the car and will be dragging your rear bumper around town.

If you've been converted to springs, you can replace the SLS pump with a blockoff plate (any old piece of aluminum)

You can remove the pump but you will have to cover where it interfaces to the engine. If the back is not dragging, then you will want to disconnect the rear sway bar to leveler arm. If you do not the system may leak down as the back end bounces up and down.

But if the back end seems to be at ride height, the system is probably working. Also the cover will never fully seal into the housing. It does have what appears to be a visible gap around it. You may already know that now after the research you did.

In my original post, I stated that it was 'obvious' there was a problem with the front cover not seating......At 60 years old in May, I'm finally comfortable with saying "I was wrong". Ride height is good, little bit of forward rake if anything. I'll go 'fix' the next thing on my list. Thanks for your help.

Not much to look at compared to most of the beautiful cars on this site...... Bought it last week from some friends/clients we were having dinner with. It was 1/2 mile from our house. Visiting over dinner I asked what they were gonna do with their old diesel wagon (sitting for 5 years). Next day it was ours after I jump started it. He is Dutch and bought it in Holland when new, and imported it into NY that year. When I went to get the title a couple days later, his manager for his cheese importing business told me he had brought 2 over together, but one had been sold. The one with the manual tranny. Dang! Oh well, for a thousand bucks it's a lot of car, and I'm a diesel nut and a chronic tinkerer, so it's pretty much perfect. Besides with a stable of single cab trucks, we needed something with a back seat! Getting married next month and my bride is going to use it for her 24 mile round trip commute. Gotta keep her earning money reliably!
