Yeah, $50 every 2 weeks would be good. I can do that if I leave my car parked for about 10 days.

On top of that, the $37 per hour you are saving is AFTER INCOME TAX. That makes it about $52-$53 per hour.

Well it looks like its saving MORE than $50 every time you fill the tank. And yeah, I'm curious as to how to make that much money in my free time as well.

I think the point is BioDiesel IS worth the effort. Your recycling, saving money, helping the environment and driving around on your own gas. Isn't that a good feeling?

time = money

Anyone can spend their time to make more money doing any number of things, the question is how much your time is worth to you. The older I get, the less I care about making money and the more I care about doing what I enjoy. I enjoy playing with cars (sometimes), even though I know it would usually be "cheaper" to pay my indy than spending my time messing with them (especially if it takes me twice as long). OTOH, the idea of mixing fuel does not sound like very much fun. I can think of plenty of other DIY projects that I would rather do (i.e., my wife wants the house repainted and I would rather do that myself than pay to have it done).

No I agree with you Craig. It is all about how you enjoy your time. You are doing the same thing by painting the house on your own. You are saving money by doing it yourself. How much is that worth, I dont know, what I know is if it is worth it to you, then it is worth it and that is what is important.

That is definately what it boils down to for me. I actually enjoy making the fuel. It's challanging and fun. I have a mechanical streak in me that is not being challenged by my IT job. This helps fill that need and saves me some money.

I drive my 300D about 40K miles per year and spend less than $.30/mile. At 25 mpg and $4/gallon, it's only about $.16/mile for fuel. Based on my driving, that leaves me $.14/mile ($5600/year) for everything else (maintenance/repairs/etc.). The current IRS allowance for personal auto use is $.505/mile and that is pretty generous.
um... it's a 79 td... nowhere near 25mpg. more like around 19 or so factor in 2 quarts of rotella every 500 miles or so and it gets really pricey to drive. at the current price of 3.999/gallon of D, and 4.00/quart of rotella, that's over .46/mile.

an IRS allowance only helps if your job makes enough income to file... he does not. he only makes around 2200 yes hundred per year... sad. but it pays his rent.

Actually, that's about $.23/mile for fuel/oil but I do understand your point. Honestly, someone who only makes $2200 per year cannot really afford to drive anything regardless of fuel cost.

My station is a $3.999 now. At another place I've seen diesel as high as $4.129 a gallon. Very nicely primed for Memorial Day. Never you mind that warm weather reduces #2 oil demand.....

The overall impact has yet to filter through the economy because it is the trucking companies getting squeezed. Once they have a few more truckers drop out of the business, they'll be able to pass freight costs along and that's when inflation will kick in to the next level.

Got everyone beat....

Here diesel is now $4.25/gallon. Just over the border in Maryland the cheapest I've seen lately is $4.09.

Insanity.

Just for the record.....the guys that make their own fuel are helping all of us by not using our nations fuel supply which lowers demand. Thanks all....

Cheers,

Bill

$4.259 at my formerly-favorite station now.

Looks like we are on target for $4.50 + by Memorial Day.

This coming winter people will be stealing trees (firewood) to stay warm.

Right after my last post diesel jumped to $4.39 but yesterday it dropped a dime so now it stands at $4.29.

Heard a rumor that later this year it will fall off considerably. The theory is as our economy weakens, we'll be buying less goods from China and the Chinese demand for oil will fall. Thats the theory anyway....

Cheers,

Bill
