Unusual Vac pump, 61x series.

Ive been reading through that huge thread on 'vac-pumps, are you neglecting yours'....

All/most illustrated have a roller that runs on the timer cam. Mine Hasnt!

I have one thats driven by a short internally splined tube from the timer to its central rotary cam-shaft that operates the vac plungers/parts sidewise on--There's one each side. The Timer central bolt has an oil delivery hole to supply this 'odd' pump with oil

So--No Roller or lever-arm, just a rotary drive taken from the timer/shaft.

Ive never seen this type or heard about them here. I would have taken pics of it, but its now fitted to the engine.

Anyone else got one of these or know anything about them?

The early US 116's with the 617 had dual diaphragm pumps. Your description sounds like it could be one of those although I've never looked inside one. Is yours a diaphragm or a piston pump?

Have a look at chapter 43-625 in the W123 FSM - is that the one you have?

Sorry Stretch--I dont have the WSM!

This pump came with a 1984 engine that I rebuilt and put into a 280TE wagon,--so no, its not the one oin the sig--That has the usual pieerburg diaphragm one with the roller and lever.

The history of that now re-built engine is rather odd.

It appears it came from a French Wagon that was imported to UK and scrapped.
This engine had been stored badly and rust had eaten a cylinder-liner out so it needed full attention--all now done and running well.

--The vac pump came separately--the guy I had the engine from--well known to UK W123 owners, Mark-Cosovich had removed it for someone before I bought the engine --who apparently then didn't need the pump--Or summit!

So--It May--Or may Not have come from this 'French' wagon engine originally, I have no idea, it just seemed an unusual pump, that may--or may not have a potential to 'destroy' an engine, like the normal type.

It has two pipe fittings, one an inlet the other an outlet--which is plumbed into the airfilter cover.

You can access the FSM or WSM (in principle) at

www.startekinfo.com

(But I've sent you a PM so read that first)

The problem with the startek site is that it is crap even though they give FREE access to the manuals for R107, W201, W124 and W123 models

If it's plumbed into the air filter it's an early pump. Is yours a double diaphragm pump? If so, it's from an early 116 since they were also plumbed into the air filter.

If you used that vacuum pump from an other engine, make sure you also use the two locating pins from the block to the pump housing.
This pump has to be aligned with the drive spline.

The double diaphragm Pump will not work with the more normal Timer.

Hmm--I believe its a double chamber pump. (Two sorta 'boxes' on the casting. Not sure if its a diaphragm--I'll take a look later, see if I can tell whether its diaphragm type or not.

From a W116--Well, Thats an odd one--No Diesel W116 imported to UK as far as I know--but as this was a French engine--maybe it got changed over there before it got scrapped over here....
--From what you are saying, Kerry--They would need to change over the Timer too....

Just trying to recall whether the timer had the cam ramp on it or not--it was a good few years ago I built up that engine and fitted it--Its still only ever done 40 miles since then.....
--I plan on putting that car on the road later this year, so I can do some much needed work to the wagon in the sig....

The 116 double diaphragm pump (one on each side) had 2 vacuum outlets--a big one just for the brakes and a smaller one for everything else.

Ah--Now, That makes me think--There were two fittings on the vac side, I do remember fiddling round with those.....

Large bolted fitting for the nylon brake-booster pipe, and a smaller stem for a rubber vac line.
--So, Mystery solved, Somehow a W116 double-diaphragm vac-pump found its way into this engine....
