Are OM617 injectors universal?
Swap from 78' Non-turbo to 84' Turbo? My neighbor is an old diesel mechanic and kindly rebuilt the 78's injectors. Can I do the old switcharoo?

Unfortunately, the turbo injectors are stronger than the non-turbo injectors due to the higher pressures the turbo generates in the cylinders, and so non-turbo injectors won't work in a turbo.

They have different cracking pressures, but as far as I know the bodies are the same and the nozzles the same. They won't run right because of the different springs and shims in them.

Ah! Dang. The 78' runs great, but the rest of the car is falling apart. Well this is a good excuse for new nozzles. What do you guys recommend? Bosio or Monark?

Did you get another Mercedes? Last I heard you were working on getting a good head for the 78...gave up on it?
Oh and what I have read, its not a good idea to just switch nozzles...the injectors really need to be sent off for balancing, pressure testing and I believe it was lapping....with out the proper equipment its hard to know if the springs are good and if you need different shims..

That's a bummer, but I am glad you learned when to throw in the towel. I love the new one, the exterior paint is gorgeous....never been a fan of palomino interior...you should looking in to getting some vinyl die to fix the pink color....are you going to keep the 78 or part it out? That 84 is very nice, specially the not cracked dash and turbo! As long as you keep up the maintenance and implement everything you have learned....this one should last your lifetime...

Sadly I had to use Bosch injectors in my car, like 2 years ago because monark nozzles were no longer being made and no one had any. So far the car runs and gets good mpg....but the idle seems to keep getting rougher...I imagine its because of the injectors but my blow by is so bad that I refuse to sink money into more new injectors....I need to check timing chain stretch and readjust the timing....that may help... But in my case I haven't had any real bad issues with the nozzles..

Your 84 is beautiful, you scored on that one. I would have the 78 and 84 in the barn in bad weather and drive the Honda, those are a dime a dozen.

The injectors for N/A and turbo OM617 look the same, but their "pop pressure" is different. The N/A injectors are set at 115 bar, whereas the turbo injectors are set at 135 bar. The OM615/6 use the same 115 bar injectors. An injector previously set for 115 bar can be reset (shimmed) to pop at 135 bar, or the other way around. I think this answers your question......Rich

As previously stated the bodies are the same.
I also am of the belief that shimming the spring inside the injectors will modify them to the standard for the turbo engine. I suggest anyone who doubts that might seek assurance by comparing the part numbers on OEM nozzles. I probably would do that if I had a set of well functioning injectors from a non turbo 617.
