I hope you used the proper coolant zerex g-05, since the w115 240d has mostly metal coolant parts, it may not be so bad to use something else....but the majority of people say, that if you use only one correct fluid, make sure it's the coolant...

I had really bad blow by on my 300d when the muffler plugged and the turbo blew the metal gasket between the exhaust manifold and turbo part. I was using 50% Lucas oil stabilizer to keep the oil in the motor. Worked good for me tell I found the problem. Just let it idle for awhile before you drive off in the mornings.

Not to start a coolant war, but was Zerex g-05 available when the engine in question was new?(1976 240D)

I don't know, I wasn't alive then

I am sure they had Mercedes brand coolant back then, which is the same as zerex g-05...but just from another mother

I was, and I believe that the coolant that was used on these cars is the same green coolant available today (maybe not even as good as today's coolant). Talking with my radiator/A/C shop buddy, I have gotten an education on coolant and A/C through the years. As far as I am concerned, the standard green coolant is going in all my 'Benzs. No need to spend more $ for something with no benefit. Everyone should do themselves a favor and research. Here is a snippet:
Antifreeze types IAT, OAT, hoat, nmoat. Recycled, boutique coolants.

This should be the last word on this hijack, so start another thread if you want to continue this debate.

WTF

I wasn't hijacking the thread and I wasn't starting a debate.....I simply implied he should use zerex g-05 since it is now the same price and availability as standard green coolant....if that is even what he used....

I am not saying that you are totally responsible for hijacking the thread (actually I am probably responsible because of my reply to your "opinion" on what coolant he should be using), but I don't think the coolant debate should continue here unless the OP wants it to. There is a lot I could say here about the coolant I think the OP should use, but it would just be my opinion (however based on real world experience for many years). As far as suggesting to use G-05 because of it being the same price, I could offer my opinion that it might NOT be the best coolant to use (at any price), but that would have to be discussed on another thread unless the OP asked for more opinions. Just sayin....Rich

Coolant

Oh yes, coolant. I put the green stuff in. Sorry. Last time I did use the official orange Mercedes-Benz stuff in the white container that I paid a lot for. It turned green anyway because there was still some green left in the system (I'm afraid to try a citric acid flush because a mechanic friend told me it is likely to expose leaks...and someone else who had a W115 240D said he had to search far & wide to find a good used radiator because you can't get a new one anymore.)

I did remove the dead flies from the fins of the radiator; maybe that will help.

So, test drive today....cold start was no better, the usual missing & nailing and smoke, in fact, I noticed more smoke during uphill acceleration than before (go away, tailgaters), but it feels a bit peppier, like I got a few of my horses back. You really notice any loss of power in a 240D because there isn't much to begin with.

That strange metallic tapping at idle after acceleration is still there, so I will definitely replace the injectors as soon as I have a free afternoon and see if it cures that.

Something just popped into my head, have you ever replaced your vacuum pump? If the diaghram goes bad, this could cause oil to get sucked into the intake, cause smoke and they can get bad enough to cause the metallic tapping sound....if you have very high idle, it could be the diaghram on the injection pump..
