my 1978 300D has 298k and change on the clock. That's barely broken in for this community!
I have no idea how many miles are on my 1972 220D. Could be only 12k, could be 312k.
Those confounded five digit odometers!
BUT, when I got the car and title I became the fourth owner of the car and for several decades it had been stored with the second owner so, it actually *could* be only 12k miles. That little engine in there has a good amount of pickup and it would only marginally surprise me if the car actually had that little mileage on the clock.

An interesting factor to consider in engine life, using mileage as a proxy, is the rear end ratio. Some Mercedes have 3.69 rear ends, while mine has a 2.47. Assuming the same size tires that would mean that one car with 300k on the clock would be roughly equivalent to another car with 200k. Typically the car with the higher rear end number will be revving higher at any particular speed thus putting more stress on al moving parts, so the effective wear equivalent would likely be even higher.

If engines came with an absolute rotation counter it would be interesting to see how many cycles these engines would actually make over their lifetime.

how about gassers?

I know this is the diesel discussion but 6 months ago I sold my 1990 300 SEL (126) to a friend. It had 346,000+ at the time. Now it has 351,000+. Not bad for a gasser. And yes, he's still my friend - he thinks it's the best car he's ever had.

Nothing super impressive.

250k on my 92 300D
250k on my 87 300D
275k on my 87 300TD

A friend has 320k on a 97 E300 on the original trans and motor which is impressive. Another friend has two 602 cars with 450k on them.

My FIRST mercedes was an 82SD the owner sold because it would not run reliably.
I got it for a song, with 338K on it. I changed the battery, and alternator, and drove it for 6 years before I found this site to fix the odometer that wasn't going once it passed 399K... I swapped in a higher MPH speedo with 254K showing on it, and I sold the car last year with 292 showing on the odo... the new owner is currently not driving it, but he's put on about 12K since I sold it to him... so, that's around 404K on original odo, another 38K in my use, bringing it up to 442K and the new owner's miles brings it up around 454... original chain, 2degrees of stretch noted last tune up... runs incredibly well... but is due for a vacuum pump *(the reason it's not being driven at the moment) and starts nigh instantly...

That is funny the mention of the Odometer changes and diff. ratios. That was the case with my Toyota. The odometer will read approx 302k in the Lotus now. But that is not indicative of anything, with it being the third rear axle, (6.7",7.3",then 7.5" Supra) and third engine (8v, 16v, 20v) and third trans. (165hp is about 25 too much for T-50 trans!).

must be because they are big comfortable highway cruisers that are easy to pack miles onto. I think ive seen the one you are talking about. There was also one towards cape cod with 500+ on it a few months ago too.

I've been thinking about that car. With a new addition to our family the 190d is a bit small and without the old wagon I'm looking for a bigger ride. Maybe I'll go check it out.....
