RTV Sealant for oil filter housing?
Curious what are peoples thoughts about replacing the oil filter housing to block gasket with rtv sealant?
Mine is leaking, and I don't have funds for a new gasket....and I have 3/4 of a tube of rtv left, that I used to replace the lift pump gasket....worked great!....so I was think of just removing it and using rtv to stop the leaking......its driving me insane..... Of course I could always just buy more oil to keep in the trunk, till funds are available for a gasket....

1982 Mercedes-Benz 240D Sedan - Oil Circulation - Page 1
They show two gaskets. one for $2.00 and the MBZ for $6.25. I would go with the gasket and forget the RTV. How about cleaning the old gasket with something to deoil it, and use some permatex gasket sealant? Or use the old gasket for a template and make a new one out of some gasket material? I would be afraid of the RTV squeezing out and getting into the oil system. Charlie

When I installed the last gasket I used gasket sealant on it, so I am not positive I could remove it and do it again, or remove it to cut a new one....
That is my one biggest question mark....is the rtv squeezing out into the clean oil duct.... They are cheap, but its the shipping that gets me....I wish they could use a first class envelope but no they have to use a box the size of seat cushion and charge double the price of the gasket.....pennies are tight for me now, I have to beg for money to go see a doctor in October....

The secret to successful RTV application is full degreasing of the contact surfaces and not putting too much on.
In your situation I think you have little choice but to give it a go. If you have one of those plastic type gaskets then you'll be able to remove the RTV easily. Spend a lot of time and attention to tightening the bolts on the housing in a cross pattern sequence so that the surfaces join more or less evenly and at the same time.

I use RTV gray on just about everything without exception. I am using it as a gasket for just this surface on my 240 engine without issue. Just don't goop on a gallon of material and you should be fine I think

If I am not mistaken, auto parts stores sell gasket material by the roll. Or they used to.
It you are really too worried about RTV to use it, you can always flatten out a 2-quart milk container and try carving out your own gasket.

One way to make a gasket is to place and hold the gasket material on the surface you want to match. Tap the edges lightly with the ball side of a ball peen hammer. The edge will cut the material and make a gasket. The ball end will also make the holes.
You could also use a little sealer on the gasket.

I wouldn't use anything but the OE gasket in that location except in the case of an extreme emergency. Bunch of people died in Colorado a number of years ago in a helicopter crash, including the husband of my wife's friend. Cause of the crash was a seized engine as a result of a piece of silicone sealant getting lodged in an oil passage.

If you need to pattern a gasket but don't have an old one to copy:
Take the part, lightly oil it, and place it onto a piece of gasket material (or cereal box paperboard-motorcycle guys love this one). The oil will leave an impression of the area and you can then cut it out.

If you have a razor blade I can send you an 8" x 8" square of gasket material.

It also just pooped back into my head, the garage I got the car from removed the oil filter housing and when I installed it, I was missing 2 bolts.....I went to pick n pull and grabbed two more.....I never loosened it and cross tightened the bolts.....I just threaded in the 2 missing ones and tightened them......I am wondering if I reloosen all the bolts, and tighten them correctly.....if that may fix the issue.....or maybe its been leaking to long....

The original Gasket I removed from mine was simply a normal Paper Gasket. I don't see why you simply could not make another one. Silicone Sealant likes to squeeze out into areas that you don't want it to go and can block passages. If you use it be sure to wait 3-4 hours to allow it to cure before you run the Engine. That way it will stay put and not move along with the Oil and block a passage somewhere down the line.
