Loud ticking from engine

I have isolated the noise, but I don't know what the part is called and can't find it listed in any diagrams. It sits up top between the vac pump and the front of the engine and is aluminum and rectangular shaped.

Also, any ideas why this is clicking so loud? The car starts and runs, feels like it is running out of gas every once in a while.

Someone might be able to help you if you told us which engine and model you are writing about.

Yup. Model, year, engine at minimum and a picture of the mystery box would be terrific also .

My guess is you have a w123, and the vacuum pump you are describing is the power steering pump, and the rectangular device on the front of the engine would be the vacuum pump... noisy vacuum pump is a bad thing.

It could also be the cruise control servo. I have heard them make a clicking sound before.

Sorry, It's a 1985 300DT It's connected to the throttle linkage off the top of the valve cover, with "VDO" is cast into the metal. Thanks!

Mine went to ticking for a while. Since my cruise control was inop anyway I just removed it.

Disconnect (unplug) the wire going from it. Replace it if you want cruise.

Follow the cable from the "VDO" box to an 8-pin plug on the left fender just ahead of the black relay box on the wheel well. Unplug the connector.

If you want your cruise to work again:

Remove the lower dash panel on the drivers side. Look up you will find a shiny aluminum can about the size of a paperback book right above the brake pedal. Do not remove the two philips screws that seem like the obvious choice, but find the 10 mm bolt hidden in the bracket (visible if you look straight up from below). Unplug the amplifier connector and slide the amp out of its location.

Contact JamesDean on this forum, he rebuilds the amplifiers.
