By the way, where is the yard you are going to? It appears that there are several 'Benzs (123's & 116's) to choose from. Every once in a while I go parts pickin', and that yard looks like a good one. It would be a road trip, but it may be worth it for me......Rich

I must have misread something about injection pumps then, the one in there now reads RW 375/2200 MW 27

EDIT: Sorry, I just remembered that you are looking at '79's, so the breather tube may be dumping into the "U" tube (not the online video hosting site).
Oil in the air cleaner can also be a symptom of a failed vacuum pump if I'm not mistaken. What style vac pump did the W116 300SD come with?

I'm going to the one in Windsor right off the freeway. The only other diesels they have right now are a 1979 300D, 1984 300SD (no engine) and 1970 200D (at least I think it was a D). But in general they have a pretty decent selection. I usually go for W201 parts -- almost never see a dead diesel tho!

Possibly found a guy to help with the engine swap. He's got a truck and much experience with the W123 diesels. Only problem is neither of us has an engine hoist...

You can rent them...or buy one at HF for the job and sell it on CL when you're done. When I started my project I found a guy getting rid of almost new engine hoist, transmission jack, jack stands, crawler and engine stand for next to nothing. Keep your eye out for deals on CL. You'll also want an engine leveler.

99% of all these engine hoists are made in China, no matter what name is on the unit. I picked up a used one for $65. some of these guys want as much for a used one as a new one or more.

Some only have 4 Casters, are harder to roll around, and do not fold up. the more casters the easier it is to move it when you have 600# or more hanging on it. the one`s with 6 casters will fold up.

Here is a killer deal on a Load Leveler close to you.
Engine hoist load leveler

This is like the one I picked up for $65. this guy must think it is Gold plated. 2 Ton Engine Hoist

All of the diesel engines are gone, except for a 1979 300D, which of course is non-turbo. Better news though, I should have access to a much cheaper working engine in my friend's 1985 300TD. Caster bushings pushed through rusted frame, he got another 300TD in better shape that has trouble starting. He blames biodiesel for rotting away seals. He says any parts are mine if I can help him get it running.
