What is the part# of your W123 steering gearbox

I have seen many "assumed" swapped units that don't match EPC application.

It would be useful to have an interchange list.

Please note: The list in post# 1 is what EPC has, and is growing as I have time to build / update it..

1979 - 85 300CD steering gearbox
MB# 1234605801

1983 300D steering gearbox

Psych !

Very timely, I just asked this question in another thread.

Good idea !!

Steering Box R&R DIY

specifically I'd like to know if a 1983 240D steering box is the same as the one used on a '79 300D.

I have three w123 boxes and they all have the R 116 461 04 01 part number.

They came from a 1979 300d, and two 1983 300d's.

I have a feeling that the numbers on the casing are just the numbers for the casing and not the whole unit - a bit like when people try to identify a transmission. I'm not 100% sure about this though - just a feeling

I'm 99% sure you're right. I haven't yet had a box which matched the numbers in EPC.

I think the 46-010 section of the FSM is supposed to be the "how to" guide of identification. http://www.startekinfo.com/StarTek/outside/12265/disc_2/program/Chassis/46-010.pdf

I just checked the numbers I knew of, 116 461 04 01 (on the case), 123 481 04 06 (pitman shaft plate) and EPC doesn't know either of them.

I too went to the Russian EPC and couldn't find that number mentioned

It is a rash all over google though - but only on sites like ebay where people have found the number written on the casing and thus say it is 116 blah blah blah...

It seems to me that that's probably not a good number to go on
