Hose running off valve cover vent, non-turbo 300d w123

Been searching online but everything I find refers to the setup on turbo cars.

I just realized that the breather/vent elbow on the valve cover of the '80 300td is connected to a formed plastic hose that branches down in behind the manifold and goes nowhere -- the blowby gases are venting under the hood. (I had been wondering why I could smell what I thought was an exhaust leak but could not locate one.)

Can someone just give me a quick answer where it supposed to be routed to? I would like a headstart in case I can get to it and do something this evening.

No, this is the early non-turbo setup. The exhaust from the vacuum pump runs into the air cleaner.

Not my car in the pic, but same setup.

It's been many years since I had a 123, but doesn't it go to the bottom of the air cleaner? I vaguely remember that there was a nipple there for the hose connection.

Venting that line to the atmosphere is grossly polluting, and as you've discovered, does nothing to enhance the ambiance of the car.

Yes, I believe it's supposed to attach to the bottom of the air cleaner. There's no oil separator that drains back to the oil pan like on the turbos, instead any oil just builds up in the cleaner, but that's how it goes on that design for what its worth.

It attaches to the underside of the intake manifold up underneath the air cleaner.

Aha

Great, maybe now I can drive this car for more than 20 minutes without getting a headache.

Your replies make perfect sense, Pretty sure that someone has substituted some other hose as a brilliant cludge. There is no way what is there could be persuaded to run up into the air cleaner.

Thanks for the replies.

If by magic you could step into this picture

You'd find that the black hose from the top of the rocker goes into the underside of the air filter / intake manifold too

You can just see the connection on my intake manifold here =>

(From this thread OM617 manifold oil = broken valve guide which also shows the tube inside the rocker cover if you'd like to see how that's meant to look)

So from what I see in the pics, there is supposed to be a second rubber elbow, like the one on the valve cover, on the intake?

i see that small rubber elbow on parts sites a lot when i'm looking for the hose that runs from the VC to the top of the air cleaner (in later models). i didn't even know what it was for, and now i know.

Looks the same to my eye as the one that makes the bend coming out of the valve cover outlet, on both my cars. No?

May be but in your case I guess possibly not.

Now that's helpful!

Problem is =>

"They" arsed about with so many different emissions systems over the years with pipes here there and everywhere it is difficult to know what went where. Same story for the throttle linkages.

If I were you I'd look into getting some fuel pipe of the right diameter and cut it to length and fit with jubilee clips.

Alternatively pop off down to your friendly dealer and see if your VIN comes up with the good number for your car.

Don't go by my almost emissions exempt Euro version - I was just saying about the attachments going from either the inlet manifold or perhaps (based on what others are saying) the underside of the air filter housing.

I think you are best off taking a butchers

Not to mention vacuum setups. Though I got spanked once on this forum when I suggested that might be unnecessarily complicated.... Or revenge for w w two.

Oh, I went and got three feet of heater hose last night and if I can't do this properly right away, I am routing the gases out the opening in the inner fender for the moment. I don't plan on inhaling this crap one second more than I have to.

PS: The use of "friendly" and "dealer" in the same sentence is a five-point demerit

Mine actually is friendly (until I ask for discount)
