Hose running off valve cover vent, non-turbo 300d w123

Been searching online but everything I find refers to the setup on turbo cars.

I just realized that the breather/vent elbow on the valve cover of the '80 300td is connected to a formed plastic hose that branches down in behind the manifold and goes nowhere -- the blowby gases are venting under the hood. (I had been wondering why I could smell what I thought was an exhaust leak but could not locate one.)

Can someone just give me a quick answer where it supposed to be routed to? I would like a headstart in case I can get to it and do something this evening.
