om603 ford ranger

Howdy,
My buddy destroyed the rear end of his grey market 86 300d the other day in an accident. May be just cutting his losses and unloading the car. I'd be getting it really cheap.
I'd love to swap the om603 into my 88 4wd ranger and love even more to reuse my freshly rebuilt Toyo Koygo 5 speed trans. My ranger's 2.9 v6 makes around 140 horse and 170 ft lb of torque. What's the specs on a non turbo straight 6 om603? Where in the world could I find an adapter for the trans? Any idea what cost would be if I had a machine shop fab one up? Does someone make a trans adapter for some other domestic 5 speed?

I've browsed other posts and it seems the 603 should fit under the hood. Yes, I will most definitely have clearance issues with the sump and the cross member but has anyone seen something similar done before?

Never seen one of these swaps in a Ranger but I have seen them in several S-10 trucks. I had an 88 Bronco II with that same 2.9 so I know what a pain they can be. Sounds like its going to be a fun project.

There are plenty of adapters available for the 617 to Chevy or Jeep transmissions, but I have never seen one for a Ford or a 603. The starter is on the opposite side on 60X engines vs 61X. I believe you would need to start from scratch on this one. I have seen a guy take a donor bell that fit the engine he was using, and cut the bell off the trans and weld the engine side of the bell on the trans. The other problem would be the flywheel. Most of these conversions use the flywheel that went with the trans, and just made an adapter. In your case, you would either need a flywheel from a 201 or the more rare 124, and make it work with your existing trans, or you would need to adapt your Ford trans's FW to the 603. It is a very ambitious project, and I am sure others here would like to follow along as you do it......Rich

None of the compact, short nosed pickups - Ranger, S10, Toyota, etc... were designed with an inline 6 in mind. I'm thinking there are a lot of sacrifices and compromises in this case.

I saw a S10 blazer with an OM617 and it was packed in there. If you start thinking about air conditioning too, that may call for rear mounted radiator/condenser, that sort of thing.

The type of trans you have matters.

For Ranger , Bronco 2 , Explorer ( M5OD )

Toyo Kogyo TK5 Made by Mazda, Aluminum pan removable bell housing, 2 and 4 WD, also was made as a 4 speed. Used back to the mid 70's in Ford Courier ( Mazda built pickup )

Mitsubishi FM145 Steel pan , removable bell housing mid 80's and up 4WD only. ( the ones used in an actual Mitsu don't have a removable BH )

Toyo Kogyo M5OD Mazda no pan , built in bell housing. 2 WD from 88 , 4 WD from 90's There is a larger version used in full size trucks.

Have a look here.

Stuck my head under the truck just now and according to the ID label I have the FM146 transmission. Not sure why I thought it was the toyo.
