I never liked the US version of the show. I my mind the problem is that the US team are all gear heads that may be goofy, but not funny.
The British team is made up of a journalist, a DJ, and a classical pianist. All communication specialists. English majors if you will, not scientists. They all like cars, but they have little idea of how they work. Their approach and commentary are all from a layman's point of view, that is frequently very funny to us gear heads who know how this is going to turn out. Their British language idioms and understated observations also add to the humor on this side of the pond.

I seem to be one of the few that likes both versions of the show, US and UK. I know there's at least an Australian version also, but I've never seen it.
Anyhow, I do prefer the UK version, but am definitely a fan of the US show. I think the biggest thing it has going against it is the name. I think if they'd called it something other than TopGear, fans wouldn't be as much expecting it to live up to the British version. Incidentally, I tuned in to watch last night's episode and enjoyed it. I'm surprised any of the cars survived the last challenge as long as they did. |

Your comments help. For some reason I care about the UK hosts and I don't connect at all with the USA guys.

As far as I am concerned Tanner should be in jail for a very long time for all the stoooopid reckless things he has done on public roads.

The show didn't feel like a durability comparison of the three cars though. They should have cut the wires to the Honda's fan if they wanted a fair test. Of course, with a 0 clearance engine, that would have put a quick end to the test. The final piece was more about what the viscosity of different alternative lubricants is than a test of engine reliability. The end result would have been the same alternative oil winning no matter what car they put it in.

I can't stand to watch the show. They are usually destroying a car that I had in my youth.

Never seen the show. I don't watch much TV. It sounds like a silly show if all they do is destroy cars.

It's a silly show. I've seen every episode. Worth it.
They certainly do more than destroy cars.

I set my DVR to record so I will watch it at some point. I think the UK version is far and away better than the US version. They also had a W123 that they drove across Africa a few years ago.

I've never seen the US version before. I'll see if I can find it on youtug. I think there was an episode when the UK top gear numpties met up with the Aussie numpties but I don't think anything especially unpredictable happened. After the UK lot pretended to destroy that car wash I think it all went a bit boring. The jokes are getting as sad and as old as the presenters... However, I don't think I'll ever get tired of Vicky Butler-Lee-Cho-Barry-Burt-Frank-Henderson giving it "weeeeee!" on 5th gear whilst grinning like the little chip monk she is wazzing it around corners in a fast car - there's always some primeval stirring going on somewhere when a byrd can do that...
