99 is in terrible shape south of Stockton, so if you are going that route, cut over to I-5 on 205 at Manteca.

I don't see any reason to take 99, though. That road is stressful from Fresno to Sac.

I don't think this helps. But when I goto Vegas from here (coast) I go 166 east to 99 north to Arvin. Turn right at a lettuce field, go through town, a little mountain, and pop out 15 miles east of Bakersfield.

Don't forget to check in with mother.
Lucas, however then have to slog through mile after mile of stop lights and traffic. With my Autism, I really should avoid traffic. Besides, the smell of humid and hot Bakersfield brings back found memories, including of the many that have passed.

I am not seeing the 166 east of Bakersfield. I was planning to take the 58 to 99, then to I5, but think folks saying better to take 58 to the I5 instead?

Why check with mother? Which one?

Yep, the only speeding ticket I ever got was rushing back to Mesa and decided to pass two trucks and didn't watch my speed. Got clocked at 86M.P.H., but only ticketed for 83M.P.H.. Now I keep visibility out the back window, not that I would ever speed again.

Thank you so very much!

Looks like the 120, then the 205?

Wonder what happened. I.I.R.C. went that way this summer.

Road Trip to Oregon and Maybe Washington?

Sorry. East of Bakersfield go left on the 223. It will run across 99 or 5. Avoids Bakersfield. Maybe helpful at rush hour. Probably check route times to see if it helps you. Here's the intersection of 58 and 223.

Where are you cuttin over from 99 to 5? Wasco? 99 goes all through the cities. I only use it to get to 223 south of Bakersfield. And don't head into sac at rush hour. And def not on the 99. And keep your doors locked going through there. After sac is good.

I realize now, sac is Sacramento.

And idk, I always have to call and check in mother when on the road. Usually the one that nags more.

Thumbs up

I'm in the northern part of Vancouver, WA if you need a hand, a cerveza, or tools.

I would suggest also adding F-4 tape (Self-fusing silicon tape; we used this stuff in the USAF for almost anything, just amazing. Nothing like it to actually patch repair a leaky hose well enough to drive as far as you need to (hours if need be) for a replacement.) You also insulate wires with it and more! Here's an example: http://www.amazon.com/Dorman-25329-Silicone-Repair-Tape/dp/B003P9OZ0Y

I've never had too much of problem taking I-205 around Portland except at the most heavy times. Though the drive on I-5 you get to see the inner part of Portland with the copious amounts of rivers and bridges; Land of Water, indeed.

So stick to I5?

I was born in Cali, had family in Kern County (not sure if any Kliewer family is left, though like to check at Hodel's if Peninnah is still around). Also, got folks in the Chico area.

Well, before I left, had an accident and broke the passenger side of the windshield. Slipped and hit my hand trying to put the vent in. Long story, but felt I needed to rest up. Last night got very little sleep. So, will get everything packed today and get to be early tonight.

Plus, y'all are so helpful, figure take the time and plan right.

incomplete construction is happening, and lots of it.

Sorry, 120 is correct. I'm a transplant from CA to OR and I am starting to get numbers confused.

205 through Portland helps at busy times.

We all made it to Bakersfield! Came in at six, so means nine hours total, but stopped for at least an hour and a half total. Considering the traffic, say made good time!

Had dinner at Milt's, if anyone knows. I was going to go to Hodel's, but was a mad house with some kind of event. Seems odd to be in the same hotel and eat at the same place I did growing up and going many times to Bakersfield, but alone.

Think will spend the morning going to church and see if the lumber yard is still there. It was falling down and long abandoned in the late 1990's, so just going to the site for fun, and if there, be amazed. I know the home is still down the street along with the old homestead. Makes me kind of depressed thinking of all the places and people gone... But, at least I got to know some of them.

Glad to hear you've come this far safely. It's always bittersweet coming back to a place you spent time in and seeing how things have changed and people have moved on. I'm really sentimental, and it fills me with a very deep, dull sadness.

But that type of sadness is a monument to the joy that was had in times past, I suppose.

*end emotional bit*

I'm up in Fresno at the moment (my home area) and wish you safe travels through the state over our neglected freeways as you continue northward.

As an aside, what church did you end up at?

Thank you for the nice comments!

Well, was a good day! I went to the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church, met some folks, remembered the Kliewers, but Jake died two or three years ago. Also knew a Jonny and Ruth. Turns out it wasn't my Oma he was talking about, but her cousin she wishes she could get back in contact with! Only found out tonight when I visited her. Duh! So, at least I have two routes to track down this Ruth, and another lady said I needed to spend more time and get some folks together. Said at least a quarter either were related, married, or knew them. Oh, and a database to try. Can't find it now, but a fellow said he send me some information.

Even more happy is the lumber yard was turned into an Ace Hardware because someone saw the potential of the old building! So made my day to see it all fixed up, but most of the old part left as is, even with some of the old floor. Now looking it after having structures classes, quite impressive, especially how tight the complex joinery fits.

Went by the homestead, and has changed, but for the better! The ranch house is all fixed up, the windmill is still there, but couldn't find the main house (I was 12 the last time so memory has faded and Oma couldn't recall). Even the old box car looks like the junk was cleared out and preserved. Hard to see much now a high fence was built; before it was open and folks just drove up to the front door, but then you didn't need to lock it.

So yes, if we had inquired just a few years ago, things would have been different. But, did make some progress.

Oh, and in Oroville. Mercedes is having trouble, so thinking to beat tracks to Tram's and prove I am wrong.

Have not heard anything from anyone, including my cousin. So, thinking tomorrow to head to Springfield and stay the night to be safe, and see no point.

Is Lodi, California a safe city to stay in?

Sorry for the late reply, I need to sub to this thread.

Lodi is safe enough as far as I know, but it's all relative (I'm sure you've already moved on from there as it's a day later.

Small world on the Shafter bit -- My grandfather was born there and I know a good number of people in that church and town. My home church is a Mennonite church in Fresno. If you're trying to play the Mennonite game (tracking down relatives), send me a PM, and I know which database he was talking about.

Crazy.
