Finally got to drive this car today since purchase date. FINALLY the snow had melted enough and the roads were dry. Did I mention FINALLY? and it's just a tease, as more snow is expected Tuesday night.

I've been driving my Prius this whole time, which I call the toaster. I bought it for work, as I'll be driving at least 3000 miles a month and don't want to think about maintenance and the gas savings vs. reimbursement per mile makes it like a second income. Despite the negative hype, these are the cockroaches of the 2000s much like the 616-617s cars are of the 80's and 90's. Can't kill them.

I mention this because driving a Prius lets me really appreciate the characteristics of a well sorted 126. For a 617, this thing hauls. Reminds me of my old 300D after dieselkraut tuned it. Perfect shifts, near instant turbo response, but what my old 300D lacked and the 300SD has was a like new front suspension.

Are there any NASA level companies from where this car came from? This guy has to be a very high level engineer.
Yes, I think I will send him an email... Certainly a thankyou note for his impeccable custodianship.

I am happy with the $ I spent on it, which is probably more than you paid for yours. I don't know if you want to share with us what you paid, because that may make more folks upset with you .
It sold at the auction for $2500, so right where you started on the 350SDL. My dealer buddy did have to pay fees, shipping from Texas, did some PDR on door dings, and to show a reasonable profit.

Yeah.. Amazing find. I'm jealous. Even though I'm not interested in owning any more w123s or w126s, I'd buy this.. you don't find these that nice anymore, or with as much history.. that car is ridiculously clean, and probably the nicest i've seen in awhile..

Where have I gone wrong in mu life choices that I end up with the cars that have been driven like they're rentals for 20 years?

Wow. Just wow. No doubt you stole that cat at the prices you mentioned.
Amazing find, do not let salt see that car. Drive it down here to TN and leave it with me for safe keeping

I sent an email to the previous owners and heard back today. He wants to give a more detailed response about the history of the car when he has time, but forwarded these pictures. They were very happy to find out where the car ended up.

Looks like the wife wanted a small, fun to drive car that matches their Range Rover Sports.

I'm a bit biased but I don't think a Mini would be an "upgrade" for most of us. At least the PO took care of the car. Times change and not many people these days want to drive or maintain a W126 sedan. Luckily, the car found its way into good hands. I wish my cars had the same fate before my ownership.

There are most definitely several "high level" aerospace/defense industries around the Dallas/Ft Worth area. This area has been quite the hub for the industry dating back to at least WWII, Chance-Vought, Lockheed-Martin, Grumman, Textron Industries (Bell Helicopter) just to start with.
