I get about 37-42mpg between 65-75mph when I reset the trip odo at speed. Overall in my commute driving I get about 29.

I would never buy a used car over $5000 without taking it to the dealer and getting an engine inspection done for a few hundred dollars. I mean a real inspection. Compression, leak down tests, the works. They would have seen that the codes were recently cleared. Who knows what else.

But if you have deep pockets then it doesnt really matter.

anyways...... if you want to discuss harbor freight and snap on head over to garagejournal.com

I think my P0088 is coming from the non original fuel supply hose I installed. Its slightly kinked since its not a molded hose like the original and the engine cover might have made it worse??? This is me hoping that's just it.

This is optimum, from the experience with mine. Everything has to be 'right' on these to achieve (even) this type of mpg, IMO.

The three 2005 E320 CDIs that were actually equipped with 3.0 liter V6es, that set the records for time-distance cumulative miles in Laredo, Texas - were in all likelihood fueled with specialized diesel fuel to achieve 40 mpg @ an average speed of 140 mph.

One of the Freeh Cousins reported a cumulative 48 mpg on a cross-country trip in the Northeast here last year.

Done!

Interesting! That would make since, as in electrical and friction, impeded flow causes resistance and energy. So hope it works out!

As I recall my cousin Jim reported his trip computer recorded 48 MPG for the trip, he didn't actually claim the 48 MPG as fact.

In my experiences W211 CDi's can easily get 40+ MPG at typical highway speeds of 65-70 MPH. However those numbers quickly fall when you start mixing city driving into the picture, pure city driving will result in more like 25-27 MPG. With the level of power/torque available it takes real discipline to keep your foot out the accelerator between stoplights.

My highest MPG came last year on a 912 mile trip to the outer banks of NC, the entire trip was on secondary roads and speeds of 50-60 MPH. Did the trip in 1 tank for a measured 43.8 MPG. I think thats about as good as possible with a W211/OM648 unless you wanted to drop the speeds back to 40-45 MPH, not really possible and way too boring.

My car just turned over 235K, I've now put 70K miles on it since I got it from Tyler. To date its been the most reliable MB I've ever owned, total repairs since I've been the owner are 1 conductor plate, 2 ball joints and a glow-plug control module.

Fantastic cars and I'm glad to see the ownership base expanding a bit here.

From this AM turnpike return trip behind a 18 wheeler for 20 miles. It'd be 2 less without being behind the semitruck, and my computer over estimated by 1.3 mpg by several months of actual fill ups divided by miles traveled.

I'm pretty impressed by the reliability reports that keep trickling in...they're clearly very solid cars.

A PPI at a dealership doesn't include a compression test, leak down test, etc. I doubt anyone does that unless you pay for a few hours of labor. If I was buying a 308 GTS I'd probably spend 3-400 on an extensive inspection

Today I did about an hour straight on the highway doing 70 MPH and I didn't reset any trip odometers and I just let the computer calculate the fuel mileage and It crept up to 36.1 MPG as I cruised along the highway. When I parked I checked out the fuel filter and not a drop of fuel had leaked out. Return trip home netted around 35 MPG and I filled up and calculated my fuel mileage to be 31 MPG doing 60% city and 40% highway.

My experience has mostly been that the more quickly you rack-up miles on them when in your possession, the more dependable they are. Hence, the less expensive per-mile they are to operate. However, there's any number of tipping-points of $$$ spending necessary that will come into play as the miles are racked up. All-in-all, I agree with your statement, though.

My usual short (15-mile each way.....) Interstate highway commutes yield about 32 mpg at best on mine. That's @ 60-65 mph. -With 4-miles of that on surface street driving in the downtown Dallas area.

Unless you can get these out on the open-roads for a hundred or so, or more miles in one day, they won't crack the 38-39 mpg ceiling is what I have found. -And even then......??

41 mpg on it's maiden voyage of 275 Interstate highway driving with the AC on 1/2 the drive - was a one-time achievement on this (my personal CDI.} All at 65 mph - 70 mph.

Personally, as in the case of the CDI - unless it's a true AMG, with asst. goodies and adornment - I'm usually a bone-stock fan. I dig the dual-exhaust of the CDI though!

I was disappointed to see the W212 E350 Bluetecs with the chrome dual-exhaust tips, but whatevers.

A few hundred is better than a few thousand or even $5000 for a rebuild.
Some like to roll the dice though.
