OM617 Engine Swap in 240D

The parts car is gone and this morning I drove the 240D back into the garage. I'm going to start my swap today and plan to document much of it here in this thread.

The engine is from an 85 (I'm aware of the pilot bearing issue) and the 240D is an 83 with a 4 speed.

Made some progress today.

Removed radiator, heater hoses, power steering pump, ac compressor and some lines. Disconnected shift linkage, throttle linkage, and exhaust. Unbolted motor mounts, transmission mount and ground cable. It was then time for lunch and I was sick of laying under the car.

It's been raining on and off all day today. A good day to spend time in the garage.

After lunch I installed the sheepskin seat covers I bought here on the forum a month or so ago.

I was concerned about the cracks in the MBTex being abrasive to the underside of the seat covers so I covered them with some gorilla tape before I put the covers on.

Rebuilt the shifter today also.

What do the plastic parts in your shifter look like after 304k miles?

Everything disassembled.

I cleaned all the parts and used a synthetic grease when reassembling. There's some serious wear on all the components, but its much smoother with new plastic and grease.

My bet would be the 240, as the 85 had an automatic (he is aware of the pilot bearing issue).

This was the time to bring up the issue in case he wanted to find a 300 flywheel before he puts it all together....

I'm planning on using the 240D flywheel. I just can't justify the asking price of a 300D flywheel. A friend of a friend has a metal lathe, which I plan to use to machine a 35mm OD bearing down to 34mm.

As long as you're OK with the possibility of a buzzy vibration the 240D flywheel will work. Make sure you mark the flywheel and the flex plate before you remove both of them from their parent engines.

Granted, it hasn't sold yet, so I might be negotiable . $350 + shipping I would say yes to.
