Ignition switch emergency!!

I'm replacing steering lock. No where in any tutorial did I see that if the key position will let the plug in back be released. That being said, I 'forced' it out and it came apart. I can put it back together, however, I don't know which wire goes where. There are three red wires, and the plug case has three spots marked "30," so I'm assuming that's where they go. There is a red wire with a black stripe, and red wire with a yellow stripe, a skinny green wire with a white stripe, and a fat grayish green wire with a white stripe. BTW, I'm red/green color deficient. on the plug are the numbers running clockwise from top 30, 15, P30, 15R, 50, 30, 15X. Please help.

Kirk figured it out.

For others, the rear plug to the ignition switch doesn't require any key position to be released, just wiggle it out. Ditto for removing the switch itself (3 flat-head screws, hard to get at). The "key position" refers to a release that lets you unscrew the front ring to get at the tumbler (many posts w/ photos). That part of the theft preventions that were appreciated when these cars were new, but prove problematic decades later for us bottom-feeders that own them now.

Not true. Some W123 electrical ign switch requires the key to be in certain position to unplug the switch. It is keyed. I have one like that.

Here is the actual wiring from my switch. I made the mistake of pulling the switch apart when trying to get it off of the lock mechanism, and i had to do some research.

Rasper:

Your diagram shows an 8 terminal plug, with only 7 feeders? I am asking because I am wondering how I can upgrade my '79 240 ignition switch to a newer one. They are only 7 terminal.

Thanks!

Most every MB ign saw I have worked with has the wiring plug keyed so it can't be removed without turning the ignition lock to position one (same for removing the key cylinder).

I don't know what year they started putting a lock on the Ignition Switch to lock the Ignition Switch Connector but it is there on my 1984 300D. And, you do need to put the Key in a specific position to get the connector off without damaging something.

In the pic comparing the old to new steering Colum lock you can see the white plastic T that rotates and locks the Ignition Switch Connector to the Ignition Switch.

The new Steering Colum Lock has the slot for the T piece but I did not transfer it to the new Steering Colum Lock.
There is pics of some where the T Piece is a T shaped piece of sheet metal.

One thing I did when I took out my steering column lock to install a new key tumbler was use some JB Weld to secure that evil locking pin up in the lock body so it will never lock my steering wheel again, and if the key tumbler goes bad I will be able to get the lock out.

More federal govt. nonsense to have to undo.
