'05 CDI oil and trans dipstick

I was looking for the dipstick to check the oil today on my newly acquired CDI, and only found a cap on a tube. I assumed that these cars use a dipstick for the oil that is similar to the one used for the trans. My question is: Is the dipstick the same for both? or do I need a different one for the engine oil? I have one for the trans that I got years ago when I had a '99 E300. It would be nice to be able to use one for both, but that would be too easy

FYI you can measure the exact level via the instrument cluster. I know it's not the same peace of mind as the dipstick....but it is better than just reading "oil level OK."

Lots of electronics including engine oil level. You can read oil level off dash. There is a check mode that just tell you it is ok or to add a quantity. There is also an oil level mode that tell you how many quarts to the 1/10th quart you have in the sump. Do a search on YouTube to see how to get to the screen.

Thanks all for your input. My long term plans include owning and servicing a CDI, so having the proper and specific tools is a must for me. I have most all the mechanic tools I need, as well as the Icarsoft MB specific scanner. As far as the oil dipstick, I found one by using the factory part number on ebay motors, but when I input my year make and model in the compatibility fields, it says it is not compatible. I ordered it anyway, as the part number matches the factory number.

I think the vehicle is not designed to be driven with a dipstick in the oil sump. I thought I read somewhere there is a reason why but cannot remember what it is.

Correct, just like the trans, it is only used to check the oil and not to remain in the tube.

There is some evidence that the dash display can't be 100% relied on. CDI Oil Level Measurement Inconsistency

I got the dipstick, but it just has a bunch of numbers on it. I assume the oil level is supposed to be at a certain number on the stick, but I don't know what that number is. It appears the stick is used on many different engines, and that is why all the numbers. Anyone know what number the level is for the '05 CDI?

They are available from MB. IIRC I have seen a chart that tells you where you are in regards to level at various measurements.
