Video/audio of 617 diesel sounding like rocks in a washing machine.....

I can hear the sound more predominantly when I'm in front of the radiator. Strangely, after the car is driven for an hour or so, most of the rattling subisdes.....

Listen to where you think the noise is coming from with a piece of broom stick, large screw driver or a mechanics stethoscope with one end applied to the area you think the noise is coming from and your Ear or Ears on the other end.

Check the Vacuum Pump area first because if the parts of that fall into the Engine it can take out the Engine.

It sounds like a bad alternator. I can also see the belt slacking every so often. Test by removing the alt belt(s). If the sound is gone, you know what to do.

It is a new alternator. Can a loose belt cause the alternator bearings to wear? I'm going to adjust it today.....do I need to loosen all three mounting bolts before turning the tensioner?

I doubt they'd suffer any appreciable wear since the alternator is new. The loose belts alone can create a heck of a racket on a V-belt system. Try tensioning the belt and see where that gets you.

I'm only see one of the alternator belts flapping. My guess is they aren't a matched set (from the same manufacturing batch #).

I've ran across this same problem when replacing belts in the past. It's due to the tolerances in manufacturing.

These are genuine Contitech belts......I would think they would be the same length but who knows? Perhaps Contitech experiences manufacturing anomalies????

Last evening I adjusted the drive belts for the alternator to 1/2" depression using my hand as a check gauge. Started the car this morning and the clacking/clicking sound is GONE! YES!

Thank you to everyone who posted and helped out on this one! I'm planning on purchasing the tension gauge for more accurate measurements though.........
