looking at buying a 08 E320 BLUETEC....couple questions

looking at a black on black 08 E320 BLUETEC with 153K
Had PPI done on it and it came back as having a bad turbo and a small noise coming from the rear diff. When I drove the car the turbo seemed in good working order. I test drove another 08 a couple weeks back with 140k but couldn't bring myself to spend 11K on a gold car....no offense to owners out there with gold Mercs.....just not my color....back to what I was saying, the power seemed the same for both cars. this people is asking $6800 for theirs....
I priced used turbos and they range from $800 to $1500 I'm wandering how many hours is the typical MB Indy shop going to spend on R&R?

Does this car sound like a okay deal?
I really really Love the look of this car.
It was a donation car given to the French American International school...
now I understand why. MB dealer probably Quoted 7K in repairs or the could put 2K Down on a new model.....
tax write off........

what do you guys think......
I'm not trying to talk myself out of this.....LOL
It does has fairly new correct Michelin tires....that usually shows a small sign of possible proper general maintenance

I'd love to know the diagnosis for the turbo. unless the diff was run low on oil, it probably isn't making any noise. I'm sure they're just trying to hope you buy the car and give the mechanic $10k for his sons tuition.

If it has both those issues the car is worth 2k at best. that's expensive and time consuming projects for a 10 year old car.

BTW The PPI was done by an independent shop with no price quotes just told me the issues........told me the turbo issue was it leaks oil.....not into the exhaust but onto the engine.....that's what I was told....

Buy it. But be prepared to spend BIG $$$ on this car. This is not your Father's 240D. Who did the PPI for you, and did they do a cylinder compression check on the car? Do you have the Carfax AND the MB VMI on the car?? If not, get them.

The $11K one with 140K miles is waay too high, regardless the color.

The turbo is leaking oil onto the engine, or the oil cooler seals are leaking? Oil cooler seals are very common.

Also note that on the OM642 you can expect to see a small amount of oil in the intake side of the turbo (what you look into on the turbo if you remove the Y-Pipe from the air filters).

If the crankcase breather puck is bad you will have more oil than usual there.

Grasp the end of the impeller shaft and see if there is any excess movement. Note there is a tiny amount of free play normally since the turbo bearings float on an oil film in operation.
If the turbo has no excessive free play it’s probably fine.

However there is a high probability you will have to do the oil cooler seal job regardless on a 2007 OM642 engine. It is on the high end of DIY difficulty but certainly not impossible if you have the right tools and follow the WIS directions precisely.

I agree with jay_bob. There could be no real problem with the turbo, just a knee-jerk reaction to a copious amount of oil in the intake of the turbo. I had the same problem on a friend's '07 I worked on last year (I now own it), and the crankcase breather (puck) was replaced and the high volume of oil in the turbo was brought down to a minimum. Also, one thing these engines are particular about is clean air filters. When they get dirty, the turbo will get it's air from wherever it can. The crankcase ventilation system is the next best place. With those vapors come oil. The moral of this story- replace your air filters regularly!

EDIT: BTW, $6,800 is not a bad price for that car in my opinion. I would say to buy it since it is the colors you like, and the price is decent. Chances are the oil cooler seals were replaced already with that amount of miles.
