I will say the 4 cylinder om651 is better compared to the om642, however you still have all the adblue system, nox sensors, soot sensor, scrs and dpf issues that come with modern diesels. Very rarely do you see any issues with the 651 motor, maybe a leaky water pump, cracked charge air pipe, but nothing at all like the 642's.

This is the W166 platform with the new badging destination for SUVs. Where everything starts with a G.
It is the same body as the 2012-2015 ML series. They changed up the exterior bits and updated the stereo to the ‘iPad stuck to the dash’ style. And replaced the OM642 V6 with the OM651 4 cylinder twin turbo. Yes it still has all the pollution control stuff. We have both a 2008 W164 and a 2014 W166 and the 166 is much improved from the 164 in build quality and fit and finish. The 163s (original ML from late 90s) are downright crude in comparison. W166 has a W212 style interior. W164 has a W211 style interior.

The new order of MB SUVs:
GLA = subminiature vehicle based on the A class sedans. This is also being brand labeled as an Infiniti, gotten these for rental cars before. Wants to be a real MB when it grows up. I’m 6’3 and wife is 5’3 and she complained about the lack of head room. GLC = tolerable mini SUV. These based on C class sedans. Think Honda CR-V with leather seats. Has most of the luxury features of the big boys in a small package. Back seat unusable for big/tall adults. Evolution of the previous GLK mini from late 2000s. GLE = the evolution of the classic ML platform. New design released for MY2019. Never drove the new one but have driven/owned the previous 3, see previous comments above. GLS = the original GL that was introduced along the W164 ML, identical except for being a 7 seat. And the grand daddy that goes by just G which is the classic G-wagen dating back to the 70s. Newly refreshed with the S class interior bits so you would be terrified to take it anywhere with dirt after paying well north of $100k for it.

We got it with 50k miles and now have 70k. So far everything good. I did have an emissions sensor issue, that was replaced under CPO warranty. After we got it there was a clunk on deceleration that was traced to the exhaust system. They kept it a month (hence my experience with the GLC) and did a total exhaust replacement. Moral of the story, take the 2 year buy up option on the CPO, this will give you 3 years/unlimited miles. Warranty start is original in service date so a 2016 should have at least a year of the original 4/50 warranty effective (as of Dec. 2019). CPO offers a 1 year/unlimited extension that starts when factory warranty ends. If you take the buy up (about $3k adder) you have a 3 year factory backed warranty with unlimited miles on top of the remaining warranty. The CPO warranty covers all systems and of course the power train. It does exclude anything that is strictly cosmetic - I had a seat trim with a broken tab flapping around that they would not cover. Fixed it with a strategically drilled hole and a zip tie.
