I just broke open a new mann oil filter.

After starting the diesel engine in the gasser body I noticed oil spurting out at the filter cap. Of course I left the o-ring off so I grabbed another filter box and robbed it of the o-ring.

The ring was in a plastic wrapper with two washers, one copper looking and the other aluminum. Where do those go?

If I’m not mistaken, those are drain plug washers.

Yep, they are part of changing the oil. I should have known that. Thank you, sir.

The aluminum washer is for the bolt that goes into the lid on an OM617 filter, the copper washer is for the drain plug on the pan.

This is not true.
There are two bolts, and there are no crush washers on either of them. That’s the point of the o-ring.

As stated above, your choice of aluminum or copper for the drain plug.

Yeah I was thinking of the canister on my M116 engine (420SEL), it used a center post style bolt. The OM617 doesn't make use of the aluminum washer normally. My bad. Been a while since I worked on a OM617 sadly.

It seems like if the alum washer was for the nuts which hold the cap then there would be two of them.

Frankly, I went brain dead when I saw the washers. As many times as I've changed oil in this engine I should have remembered the stack of aluminum washers I have collected from this package over the years.

It always seemed obvious that some might rather use an aluminum washer on the pan plug than use the copper looking washer.

Either that or we need the MB Sherlock Holmes to investigate.

I believe the aluminum washer was for the earlier style filter housing with just the center bolt to close it.

On some applications (350SDL?) where that filter is used, the stem is a separate part from the cap. If it were one piece, the cap and stem together would not be able to be removed. The center nut and outer two nuts are removed, and then the cap is removed. Thus the need for a crush washer under the center stem nut.
